Holiday Madness

There is change in the air.

Halloween is nothing but a distant memory and the American Thanksgiving Holiday and Christmas loom in the not-so-distant future. Decorations, candy, and tempting gift items are appearing with rapid regularity on the store shelves. In the blink of an eye, it seems we’ve hit the holiday season running.

I don’t know about you, but I already feel as though I’m behind.

But why do I feel that way? Why should I?

It’s partly a media and retail driven frenzy—buy more, spend more, how can you have your holiday without this particular bobble mode. The entire world goes crazy for about seven weeks or so every year.

In spite of it all, I absolutely love this time of year. I love everything about the holidays—the food, the music, the pretty lights, the decorations that have been in the family for years, and the time spent with family and friends.

So why is it that when the holidays arrive most of us are too tired to enjoy it?

Expectations! We all have such high expectations, encouraged by television advertising. We feel that everything has to be perfect or that the holidays are ruined.

Rubbish!

Some of the most memorable holidays I’ve had are the ones when I didn’t have that much. You remember what’s really important at a time like that. It’s your loved ones and friends, having a roof over your head and enough groceries in the cupboard. Not everyone has that.

The holidays are about the people you share it with, not the stuff. Start some new traditions this year to replace the economically challenging ones that may have outlived their usefulness. And go back to basics.

There are lots of simple and inexpensive gifts you can give--a bottle of inexpensive wine (sometimes you can get mini-bottles of wine for under $5), some homemade cookies or cake, a gift certificate for the movies or the local coffee shop. If you’re crafty, you can knit socks or scarves or even a sweater. Lots of thrift stores have bags of yarn, donated by someone who never finished their particular project. You get the idea.

I made homemade chocolates for the first time in years and will be distributing some small tins of those as presents.

My mom makes and gives away cakes every year. (We all tell her we don't care if we get anything else as long as we get our fruitcake. Yes, my mother makes the best fruitcake in the world.) It’s hard to go wrong with a gift of food. There is so much company coming and going over the holidays you can share the box of chocolates you might not particularly like, or offer guests a glass of wine from the bottle of red you’ll never drink.

Other than food, I like to give gift cards that give someone an experience—an afternoon at the movies, an evening at a coffee shop, a dinner out. Folks really appreciate gifts like that. Plus, they don’t have to find a place to store an unwanted present after the holidays are over. Face it, we’ve all gotten something we don’t like. It ends up in the back of the closet or going to the local thrift store, or worse, re-gifted to someone else who will do exactly the same thing. I shudder to think how often some presents make the rounds.

If even that is financially challenging, maybe you can give someone the gift of time.

In the crazy world we live in, I’m sure some family members or friends would appreciate that more than anything. Invite your sister, mother or girlfriend over for an afternoon of cookie baking. You’ll have fun and have a ton of baked goods to share at the end of the day. Take an afternoon and spend it with your spouse, significant other, or kids. Chose activities that don’t cost money. Go to a park. Take in a tree-lighting ceremony. Window shop  at the mall without buying anything—okay, maybe a hot chocolate at the food court, but that’s it. The idea is to spend time with that person. So turn off the computer and the cell phone and relax and enjoy.

And do something for charity. Pick up an extra can of tuna and drop it in the food bank bin at the grocery store, volunteer somewhere, drop your coffee money for a week into the Salvation Army kettle. You’ll be glad you did.

The holidays are meant to be a joyous time. Enjoy them!

Weekend Book Clue--Stars of Fortune by Nora Roberts

STARS OF FORTUNE is the first book in Nora Roberts's new Guardians Trilogy. It contains secrets, magic and much more. She brings together six people who must join forces if they hope to conquer an ancient evil. Of course, there is a love story. I always enjoy this author, especially when she steps into the realm of the paranormal.

BLURB:

Sasha Riggs is a reclusive artist, haunted by dreams and nightmares that she turns into extraordinary paintings. Her visions lead her to the Greek island of Corfu, where five others have been lured to seek the legendary fire star, part of an ancient prophecy. Sasha recognizes them, because she has drawn them: a magician, an archaeologist, a wanderer, a fighter, a loner. All on a quest. All with secrets.

Sasha is the one who holds them together—the seer. And in the magician, Bran Killian, she sees a man of immense power and compassion. As Sasha struggles with her rare ability, Bran is there to support her, challenge her, and believe in her.

When a dark threat looms, the six must use their combined powers—including trust, unity, and love—to find the fire star and keep the world on course.

Guy Fawkes Night

Today is Guy Fawkes Night, aka bonfire night. If you're having a bonfire, please be safe. It's a strange holiday. It goes back to November 5, 1605 when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while placing explosives beneath the House of Lords in London. It had all kinds of political and religious implications at the time. I remember it as the night of the community bonfire when I was a kid.

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...

Laurie Roma's October Symposium: Building a Mystery

Every author has they own method to writing, but one of questions we’ve all been asked is: are you a pantser or a plotter?

What does that mean? Do you plan out the details before you write, do outlines and lay out the entire plot in notes, or do you just wing it and go with the flow? It’s always interesting to see how stories come to each author, so read on and find out what everyone had to say!

Interview with a Vampire

Interview with Damek, vampire from Damek's Redemption, book 6 of the Legacy series.

I sit quietly and stare out over the cavernous space, which is empty other than the two people working behind the long bar dominating one side of the room. With the music silent and the overhead lights on, it looks more like a warehouse than one of the most popular nightclubs in Chicago—Inhibitions. I’m thrilled that the owner of the club has agreed to see me. Just because Damek and I know one another doesn’t mean my welcome here is assured. He likes to keep to himself. Always has.

The surge of power hits me and jerks my head around. Dressed, as always, in a designer suit tailored to his lithe build, Damek strides toward me. His black, shoulder-length hair is smooth as silk and gleams in the light. The firm set of his lips bothers me and I wonder if he’ll even talk to me.

NJW: Thanks for seeing me.

He slides into the seat across from me and studies me with his dark, hypnotic eyes. I glance away.

DAMEK: You said you wished to interview me.

NJW: I’d like to ask you a few questions, to allow readers to get a better insight into you and the way you think.

DAMEK: Is that wise?

He raises one eyebrow and leans back nonchalantly against the back of the leather bench seat. Not for one second do I believe he’s relaxed. Beneath his suit, his muscles are coiled and ready to attack at a moment’s notice. I swallow hard.

NJW: I think so.

He inclines his head in a gracious nod, but I can sense his irritation. I’ve always been able to sense his moods.

DAMEK: Ask away.

I want to start with the question most asked by readers, but I hesitate, not sure how he’ll react. Still, I did promise to do this interview. I take a deep breath and plunge onward.

NJW: You’re good friends with Craig Lawton. A lot of readers wonder why you didn’t end up with him.

A deep chill fills the air around me at the first mention of Craig’s name and I wonder if I’ve gone too far. I know how protective he feels about that particular human. He frowns and then a slow smile momentarily crosses his lips, giving me the briefest glimpse of sharp, pearly fangs.

DAMEK: I’ve always found humans fascinating. After all, I used to be one. But it is hard to watch friends die out one by one as the centuries pass and it became easier to allow no one close. Craig is different, his mind agile, his loyalty unsurpassed. As for ending up with him…I am attracted to his mind, not his body. I much prefer females when it comes to sex.

Okay, so I navigated that particular minefield without having it explode. I decide it’s best to move on to the next question.

NJW: You’re a vampire, a species that usually keeps to itself. But you’re also friends with the Striker brothers and the Haven werewolf pack. How did you become friends with them?

Damek tilts his head to one side and studies me.

DAMEK: Such an inquisitive mind.

I shrug, unable to deny his claim.

NJW: If I weren’t, your story would never have been told.

DAMEK: True enough. The story is personal and not one I’m willing to get into, but let’s just say that times have changed in the past century. With the rise of technology, the paranormal bounty hunters have been able to mobilize better, which is not a good thing for either species. Joshua and Isaiah Striker passed along some information to me back nineteen nineties that was instrumental to my avoiding a pack of rabid vampire hunters. I owed them.

NJW: But it’s more than that.

DAMEK: It is. I find I like the damn troublesome werewolves. Plus, there is no denying their impeccable taste in women.

One corner of his mouth turns up in a smile and I can feel how much he likes the werewolves…and the women.

NJW: Yet, the wolves haven’t always extended trust to you.

I know I’ve hit a sore spot when his smile fades and his eyes tinge with red. I swallow hard and try to slow the racing of my heart.

DAMEK: Tread carefully.

NJW: Sorry, but it’s true. And it’s unfair.

I’m indignant on his behalf. Damek’s done nothing but protect and help the wolves, and when he needed their absolute trust, he didn’t get it, at least not from everyone. The red fades from his eyes and they warm slightly. I know that he’s read my thoughts and I feel my face heating under his regard.

DAMEK: Thank you.

NJW: You’re welcome.

I don’t want to push my luck and decide it’s time to wrap up this interview.

NJW: One final question. Your life has changed a lot in recent days. Are you planning on staying in Chicago or are you going to relocate anytime soon?

DAMEK: Much has changed, but I like this city. I enjoy the people who live here and have no plans to leave in the near future.

I note he doesn’t mention the Haven pack or Craig Lawton specifically. Nor does he mention Sonia Agostino, but I can see by the warning in his dark gaze that she is totally off limits for discussion. That’s okay by me. I want readers to delve into his book and discover that particular story for themselves.

NJW: Thanks for taking the time to talk with me.

DAMEK: My pleasure.

He rises, inclines his head in a courtly gesture and leaves me seated at the table. He stops at the bar momentarily before heading to his office.

My interview with Damek is done and I release a slow breath. As much as I love him, he’s not an easy man to be around. Not surprising considering he’s a one-thousand-year-old vampire. There is so much he could tell me about the history of the world. He’s lived it. But he keeps his thoughts to himself, self contained and powerful, a necessity that’s kept him alive as long as it has.

I look up as I sense someone approaching the table. One of the bartenders places a glass of red wine on the table in front of me. “Compliments of the boss,” she tells me before walking away. I pick up the glass and sip. The wine is fruity and full-bodied, with just a touch of something I can’t quite place…

Happy Book Birthday to Me!

Today is a very special day for me...it's my book birthday. That's right, eleven years ago today my first book was published. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to do something I love so much for a living.

huge THANK YOU to everyone who has ever bought one of my books, and to the many of you who have bought them all. Thank you for your kind words and emails, for getting my name out there and for letting others know about my books. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.

In the past eleven years, I've had 82 books released. That boggles my mind. It includes 50 with Ellora's Cave (some of which are no longer available), 28 with Samhain Publishing...and counting, 2 novellas as part of boxed sets, 1 with Carina Press and 1 in a print anthology. It's been an amazing eleven years. Can't wait to see what the next eleven hold.

To celebrate, I bought an awesome cupcake. :)

Weekend Book Club--Darkest Before Dawn by Maya Banks

DARKEST BEFORE DAWN is the tenth book in Maya Bank's wildly popular KGI series.

Just when you thought the KGI series couldn't get any better, Maya Banks returns with Darkest Before Dawn. Readers have been waiting for Hancock's story, and Banks delivers a gut-wrenching and emotional read. This is romantic suspense at its best. Another fantastic book from Banks.

If you haven't read this series, you really need to start.

BLURB:

The enigmatic Hancock has been both opponent and ally to the KGI teams for as long as they've known him. Always working a deep game, Hancock's true allegiance has never been apparent, but one thing is for certain—he never lets anything get in the way of duty.

But now, his absolute belief in the primacy of his ultimate goal is challenged by a captive he's been ordered to guard, no matter how much she suffers in her prison. She's the only woman who's ever managed to penetrate the rigid walls surrounding his icy heart, but will he allow his perplexing feelings for the beautiful victim to destroy a mission he's spent years working to complete or will he be forced to sacrifice her for “the greater good.”
