2014 Year in Review

2014 was a rollercoaster of a year with great ups and downs. Personally, I saw the end of my 30 year relationship. I also dealt with a foot injury that is still bothering me months later. There was also some serious illness in my immediate family, but I'm happy to say that everything turned out well there.

Professionally, I've also had some ups and downs this year, but I'd much rather focus on the positives. In October, I celebrated the release of my 75th book, as well as my tenth year as a published author. I can hardly believe it's been ten years. I want to thank everyone who has ever purchased one of my books for making my dream of being a working writer come true.

The biggest surprise came at the end of the year. Earlier in 2014 I was invited to be a part of a box set with twenty-four other authors. Taming the Alpha is 25 tales across all genres, all having a hot alpha as the hero. It was released on December 9th and made both the USA Today and the NY Times Best Seller Lists. What a Christmas present! I can now put NY Times & USA Today Bestselling Author after my name. I'm thrilled.

In case you missed any of them, here are my releases for 2014.

2014 E-Book Releases:

January 17th--Debt of Honor (EC Quickie)
January 21st--Craig's Heart (Legacy--Book 7)

'Twas the Night Before Christmas...

Happy December 24th!

A Visit from St. Nicholas
by Clement Clarke Moore

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Happy Winters Solstice

Today is the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year. From here on, the days get longer. Take some time today to stop and simply be. There is so much rushing around during the holiday season that we sometimes don't stop and breathe.

Countdown to Chistmas--Favorite holiday movies and tv shows

Throughout the entire month of December, I watch as many of my favorite and classic holiday movies as I can. The movies and TV shows I enjoy tend to be the ones that say something positive about life or humanity. At Christmas time, I just like to feel good.

10. Little Women (The Winona Ryder version.) "I'm so desolated."

9. Scrooged (Bill Murray) "It's the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer."

8. A Christmas Carol (Alistair Sim) "Humbug!"

7. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (The animated version. A mean one, but a great one.) "You can't stop Christmas from coming!"

6. A Charlie Brown Christmas (I never get tired of watching the dust rise off of Pigpen when he sings or seeing that little, scrawny tree grow into a veritable forest.) "Can somebody please tell me the true meaning of Christmas?" "Sure, Charlie Brown."

5. It's A Wonderful Life (This one makes me cry, especially at the end.) "To my big brother George, the richest man in town!"

4. A Muppet Family Christmas (Swedish Chef meets the Bird of his dreams!) "Be careful of the icy patch!"

3. A Muppet Christmas Carol (Gonzo the Great plays Mist-uh Dickens himself) "Darkness was cheap, and Scrooge liked it."

2. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Not mean, just nutty.) "That tree will never go in our yard, Dad." "It's not going in our yard, Russ. It's going in our living room."

1. Scrooge (The Albert Finney version). "You wish to remain anonymous, sir?" "I wish to be left alone!"

A newer favorite is the movie Arthur Christmas. And, of course, I have to watch Frosty the Snowman. What are some of your favorite holiday television shows and movies?

Right now, JESSAMYN'S CHRISTMAS GIFT is only 99 cents at Ellora's Cave and $1.24 at Amazon. Be sure to treat yourself this EC Christmas Quickie.

Caleb Morgan is the new sheriff, and unbeknownst to her, he is also the new owner of the house. Jessamyn flees back to her own home, determined to forget not only her boyfriend's betrayal, but also the heated desire that Caleb has sparked within her.While Jessamyn is shocked by his appearance, Caleb is enthralled by her. But Jessamyn has had more than enough of men.

Now, one year later, it's Christmas time again, and Jessamyn is still swearing off men. But Caleb has other ideas. The only thing he wants for Christmas is the same thing he wanted last year and didn't quite get — Jessamyn Parker under his tree.

Throwback Thursday--Book Edition (Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey)

My choice for Throwback Thursday--Book Edition is GENTLE ROGUE by Johanna Lindsey. It's the third book in her beloved Malory series and, even after all these years, it's one of my favorites.

If you love historical romance but haven't yet discovered the Malory/Anderson series, you're missing out on something special. This series has been ongoing for over twenty years and I still love it.

Stormy Persuasion is the latest book in the Malory/Anderson saga and was released this past June.

This book, like many in the series, has been published many times and is also available in ebook. I have the original paperback on my keeper shelf.

BLURB:

Heartsick and desperate to return home to America, Georgina Anderson boards the Maiden Anne disguised as a cabin boy, never dreaming she'll be forced into intimate servitude at the whim of the ship's irrepressible captain, James Mallory.

The black sheep of a proud and tempestuous family, the handsome ex-pirate once swore no woman alive could entice him into matrimony. But on the high seas his resolve will be weakened by an unrestrained passion and by the high-spirited beauty whose love of freedom and adventure rivals his own.

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

Happy Thanksgiving Day to all my friends in the USA. I hope you all have a wonderful day filled with family, friends and great food. If you're travelling this holiday weekend, stay safe!

Coffee Time Romance loves the Salvation Pack series

WOLF ON THE RUN and WOLF IN HER BED have both received 5 cup ratings from Coffee Time Romance.

"N.J Walters is superb in the ability to draw the reader into the world she creates. I fell in love with Cole because wow who could resist? I love how Ms. Walters makes the other characters just as interesting as the main character which brings the reader back over and over. I know I am going back to find the first two books in the series just to see how the current pack came to be. I highly recommend Salvation Pack and the writing of N.J Walters because she has an awesome talent she puts to good use." ~Delane, CTR

"The writing of N.J. Walters is always a pleasure but the world of the Salvation Pack is an experience. I loved reading the story of Armand as he suffered so and deserved happiness. Anny is worthy of Armand and watching her lead him on a merry chase was something to behold. I highly recommend Wolf in Her Bed and the writing of N.J. Walters. ~Delane, CTR

The Day After

So it's the day after my birthday, and I have to say I had an amazing week.

It started with my SIL and I going to a play about a week ago. (That was her gift to me.) Then my brother took me to a hockey game this past Wednesday. (His gift to me.) That was so much fun. I had other presents from family and treated myself to two amazing cupcakes (one vanilla and one chocolate).

To cap off the week, I saw Sarah McLachlan live last night. OMG She's amazing live. I didn't take pictures or videos. Why? Because I don't own a cell phone. *g* But she did sing one of my favorite songs.

Throwback Thursday--Book Edition (Tiger's Eye by Karen Robards)

TIGER'S EYE by Karen Robards is my choice this week for Throwback Thursday--Book Edition.

This was one of the first historical romance books I ever read where the hero is a criminal. Alec Tyron is king of the London underworld. He doesn't turn out to be the long-lost son of a lord. He is exactly what he seems to be--a criminal, with many redeeming qualities. Tiger's Eye is now available in ebook, but I have the original paperback copy on my keeper shelf. It's been there since the day I purchased it so many years ago.

BLURB:

When beautiful aristocrat Lady Isabella St. Just first sets eyes on handsome Alec Tyron, he is holding her at gunpoint. Despite her fear of him, the tawny-haired, golden-eyed king of the London underworld saves her from the criminals who abducted her, only to fall victim to a gunshot wound himself. Thrown together in the seedy underbelly of glittering London, they are wary of each other from the start. Shy, sheltered Isabella has never met a man like Alec, but the street-tough crime boss ignites her passion in a way that she had never even imagined was possible. Their love is something that society cannot allow – but no matter the cost its blazing heat just won't be denied.

Weekend Book Club--Blood Magick by Nora Roberts

This week, I read BLOOD MAGICK by Nora Roberts. It's the final book in her The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy. Like the first two books in the series, it offers magic and spine-tingling shivers. The O'Dwyer cousins are working to destroy the evil that has haunted their family for a very long time. Add star-crossed lovers, pulled apart by a curse not of their making, yet forced to work together to help defeat it, and you have an amazing finish to this wonderful series.

I'm a huge fan of Nora Roberts, especially when she delves into the paranormal realm. If you enjoy this series, you might want to check out her Three Sisters Island trilogy as well as her Donovan Legacy series.

Book Three of The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy
Blood Magick

County Mayo is rich in the traditions of Ireland, legends that Branna O’Dwyer fully embraces in her life and in her work as the proprietor of The Dark Witch shop, which carries soaps, lotions, and candles for tourists, made with Branna’s special touch.

Branna’s strength and selflessness hold together a close circle of friends and family—along with their horses and hawks and her beloved hound. But there’s a single missing link in the chain of her life: love…

She had it once—for a moment—with Finbar Burke, but a shared future is forbidden by history and blood. Which is why Fin has spent his life traveling the world to fill the abyss left in him by Branna, focusing on work rather than passion.

Branna and Fin’s relationship offers them both comfort and torment. And though they succumb to the heat between them, there can be no promises for tomorrow. A storm of shadows threatens everything that their circle holds dear. It will be Fin’s power, loyalty, and heart that will make all the difference in an age-old battle between the bonds that hold their friends together and the evil that has haunted their families for centuries.

Don’t miss the first two books in the Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy: Dark Witch and Shadow Spell.

Lest We Forget

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

~John McCrae

4 Stars from Long and Short Reviews

WOLF ON THE RUN has received a wonderful review from Long and Short Reviews.

"N.J. Walters nailed it with the third book in this series, Wolf on the Run. It was a fantastic story that really grabbed me by the heart and refused to let go. It had me flipping the pages and hanging on every word as I tried to guess what would happen next...I hadn’t realized that this series could get any better, but I was so wrong. I feel that this is the best book so far because it actually highlighted what the series is about, which is choosing your own family, not because you’re related by blood or Pack, but because you want to make a better life together. A family that accepts each other flaws and all. That being said, it’s one sexy read, filled with passion, action and heartbreaking drama. It had a bloody showdown that had me breathless." ~Tulip

Guy Fawkes Night

Today is Guy Fawkes Night, aka bonfire night. If you're having a bonfire, please be safe. It's a strange holiday. It goes back to November 5, 1605 when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot was arrested while placing explosives beneath the House of Lords in London. It had all kinds of political and religious implications at the time. I remember it as the night of the community bonfire when I was a kid.

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...

Review for Wolf on the Run from Fresh Fiction

WOLF ON THE RUN has received a wonderful review from Fresh Fiction.

"WOLF ON THE RUN is a fast paced, heart pounding, paranormal love story. Author N.J. Walters takes us back to her Salvation Pack series with another superb offering of our favorite sexy wolves. This series is one that will grab you by the heart, if for no other reason than the characters are outcasts, perhaps some by their own desire, but they are trying to build a pack and life of their own." ~Annetta Sweetko

Celebrating 10 Years!

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS!

It's hard to believe that my first book was published ten years ago today. It's been a rollercoaster ride with many ups and downs, but I wouldn't trade a minute of it for anything!

I want to thank Ellora's Cave Publishing, Samhain Publishing and Carina Press for publishing my books. I want to thank Heidi Moore, Shannon Combs, Mary Altman, Pamela Cohen, Raelene Gorlinsky, Ansley Velarde, Jessica Bimberg and Deborah Nemeth. You are all amazing editors and I've learned so much from each one of you.

Tomorrow, October 28th, my 75th book (Wolf on the Run) will be released from Samhain Publishing. There have been Quickies, novellas and many full-length novels, but 75 projects in all. I can't wait to see what the next ten years have in store.

I want to send my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has ever bought and read one of my books. The beauty of the modern world is that I've been able to "meet" many of my readers through social media. Your support, enthusiasm and encouragement is invaluable.

Writing is a very solitary profession. I get up in the morning, have breakfast, turn on the computer and write. I work for weeks or months on a project never knowing if it will be contracted or rejected. And even once a contract is signed the book has to go through the editing process. When all is said and done, the book is released. I have no idea if readers will love it as much as I do.

I've been fortunate enough to have several really successful series--Tapestries, Legacy, Awakening Desires, Hades' Carnival, and Salvation Pack. There have been other books I've deeply loved that haven't fared as well. That is the reality of the writing life.

Through all the ups and downs, I keep writing...because I have to. I have a lot more stories left to tell. I hope you'll stay on this journey with me and keep reading my books.

Gratefully yours,
N.J. Walters

Halloween Movies

One of the things I love about this time of year is watching movies. I freely admit I can't watch horror movies or those with too much gore in them. Just can't. But I still have a  lot of favorites.

1.  The Crow
2.  Lost Boys
3.  Ghostbusters
4.  Underworld series
5.  Dracula
6.  The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
