Year in Review!

As the final minutes of 2008 tick away, I thought I'd look back over the year. It was an exciting year for me, both personally and professionally.

January 1st saw the release of The Seduction of Shamus O'Rourke by Samhain Publishing. That same month, Overtime, Under Him was released by Pocket Books. It was exciting to see my Ellora's Cave Quickie, Unmasking Kelly, in print. Amethyst Moon, a time-travel/menage a trois quickly followed.

Then there was a quite a break in new releases for me due to an editor change. It was sad to see an editor leave, but luckily I have a wonderful new editor!

July heated up to be an exciting month. A Legal Affair was released from Samhain Publishing and a few days later Ellora's Cave released Jackson's Jewel, book 5 in the Awakening Desires series. I also had a print release that same month--Enticements, a two-book anthology, which contained Capturing Carly and Craving Candy, books 3 & 4 from the Awakening Desires series.

Another release followed in August. Lily Blossoms is a very sexy younger man/older woman story.

November saw two more releases--Beyond Shadows, a very hot paranormal/shapeshifter story from Ellora's Cave and By The Book, a sexy, suspense book from Samhain Publishing. The Seduction of Shamus O'Rourke was released in Print too!

The year closed out with the release of my story "Moon Magic" in the Ellora's Cavemen: Jewels of the Nile IV anthology in both e-book and print.

All in all, not a bad year--8 e-books and 4 print books were released with my name on them in 2008. I couldn't be happier.

Thank you to everyone who read one of my books this past year. You've all helped make my dreams a reality.

May 2009 bring all of you health, happiness and everything good!

Happy New Year!

4.5 Blue Ribbons for Lily Blossoms

Romance Junkies has given Lily Blossoms 4.5 Blue Ribbons. Here's a snippet of what the reviewer had to say:

"Ms. Walters has once again taken us back to small town Summerville, with its hot, sexy men and more than resourceful women. Lily Blossoms is a sweetheart of a story with two people who are tired of the usual and want a whole lot more than the average....N.J. Walters at her best."

Five-Minute Fudge

Here's a simple, fast, and absolutely delicious recipe for fudge that comes from a Carnation Cookbook we had when I was a kid. Enjoy!

RECIPE FOR FIVE-MINUTE FUDGE

Place 2/3 cup of Carnation Evaporated Milk and 1 2/3 cups of sugar in a large saucepan. Bring to boil. Boil for five minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat.

Add 1 1/2 cups of chocolate chips (semi-sweet dark are my favorite), 1 1/2 cups of white mini marshmallows, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla flavoring. Stir until smooth and then pour into greased 8x8-inch square pan. Cool and cut into squares. Eat and enjoy!

Scrooge

It's not what you think.

I'm not in a bah humbug mood. But I was. *g*

Hubby and I took in a local production of Scrooge this past Friday evening. I watch the movie every year--several versions. But it's different live. No matter how many times you see it performed, each one is special.

The children have such fun and are so into their performance. They combine the traditional story with songs from the musical versions to create something special. I have to say that Jacob Marley was particularly good in this year's version. A lot of energy for a ghost.

Taking in local performances, plays or Christmas pageants is a good way to get into the holiday spirit.

Holiday Decorating

Yesterday, hubby and I finally bought a tree. It's not a real one, because the new company that took over our apartment building sent around notices letting everyone know they can't have a real one. Bah humbug!

The old company never minded at all. There was more of a feeling of community here back then. The superintendent knew most of the residents by name. But since they took over, the superintendent has changed about three times.

Anyway, hubby and I bought a tiny artificial tree. I didn't want to spend a fortune on one because, I know if we move next year, I'll want a "real" tree. Still, to quote Charlie Brown, "It's not a bad little tree."

It is sitting on a box in the living room because it's only about 4' tall. There was no way all the decorations were going on it, so we had to pick and choose our favorites, which was kinda nice. Hubby put on the lights and I sat and made popcorn and cranberry strings to wrap around it. Just like in Charlie Brown's Christmas, it morphed from a skinny little thing into a full, pretty tree. *g*

It didn't take long to put the tree up, but it does add a homey glow to the room.

It's the spirit that counts and this little tree has plenty of that!

Hope all of you are decorated for the holidays. Have fun!

Nick of Time by Elle James

This time of year, I like to treat myself to a Christmas book or two or three. *g* And this year, one of my favs so far is NICK OF TIME by Elle James.

It's fast-paced, funny, and heart-warming. You'll fall in love with Nick and Mary and all the folks of North Pole, Alaska. Do yourself a favor this year and treat yourself to Nick of Time.

BLURB:

Nick St. Claire had come to North Pole, Alaska, with a few questions for Santa, only Claus had gone AWOL. Clearly, someone was trying to ruin the holidays, though the clever cowboy never had much use for them. Until he met Mary Christmas…

Santa's only child, Mary, was left to tend shop in his absence—suddenly making her a killer's next target. Nick volunteered to protect her, but he was also a stranger with a bundle of his own not-so-saintly secrets. Could Mary enlighten him on the joys of the season, or would a missing Santa squash her holiday spirit?

First Snow

Hubby and I went for a walk early yesterday morning. We usually go on one of the city walking trails, one that goes around a small pond with plenty of ducks and swans and other birds. It's a wonderful break from the bustle of city life and we both enjoy it.

As we walked, it began to snow. There was barely any wind so the snow fell almost straight down in big, fluffy flakes. The world was quiet and the path was almost empty. At many points during the walk there was no one but us around.

What is it about that first snow of the year that's magical? The air was so still when we stopped to watch the snowflakes drift over the pond. It was utterly beautiful.

Now I'm the first one to tell you I'm not fond of snow and that by February I'll be sick of the snow. But that doesn't matter during the first snowfall of the season.

It's all gone now. Washed away by the torrent of rain that fell yesterday afternoon and last night. For that matter, it's still raining.

But the first snow fell. And it was magic. I'm glad hubby and I were out and about to enjoy it.

By The Book Gets 5 Angels!

Fallen Angel Reviews has given BY THE BOOK a 5 Angel Review. Here's a snippet of what reviewer, Rachel C, had to say:

"The sparks fly from the second that door is open and throw in a little life or death drama and you’re on the edge of your seat and breathing hard. I was already a fan of Ms. Walters and there’s no question in my mind that I will be for life. Pick up any of her books and you will be too but be sure not to miss By The Book."

Black Friday--Have a Little Faith in Me

It's Black Friday in the USA--traditionally the day when most folks get out there and Christmas shop. Many stores will open wayyyyyy too early and will have huge sales.

Once you've finished your shopping and need to relax, hop on over to Ellora’s Cave Publishing and check out the new releases today, especially HAVE A LITTLE FAITH IN ME by the incredibly talented Nicole Austin.

This is everything a Quickie should be--hot with heart. You'll love Darius and Andi as they struggle with the attraction blazing between them.

So curl up in your comfy chair with a mug of hot chocolate and treat yourself to something special. You'll be glad you did.

Blurb:

Believing in the paranormal is no stretch for healthcare worker Andreana Costas. She’s used to dealing with things most people won’t admit exist. But convincing a man of science to have faith in her intuition—impossible. Andi has no choice. A mystical warrior assigned her a mission that will have a profound impact on all mankind. Success requires big personal sacrifices, like the career she loves and the hunky doc she desires.

Helping trauma surgeon Darius Raines race to the rescue and save the world just in the nick of time is going to require all the bravery and strength she can muster. That, along with some duct tape, several silk ties and a nice firm bed.

Monday, Monday!

It rained all this past weekend, but that was okay. I didn't mind staying at home. I had a lot to think about this weekend. It was my birthday on Saturday and I find that is a day that makes me take stock of my life.

Hubby and I celebrated in our low-key way and I ate waaaayyy too much birthday cake. LOL Numerologically speaking, it seems like a special year. My birthday is 11/22 and I'm 44. I want to make this year the best one yet, stretch my boundaries and do things I'm afraid to do. I have some ideas, but I plan to make a list over the coming weeks, sort of a New Year's Resolution a bit early. By the time my next birthday arrives I want to be able to tick most of the things off my list...or at least some of them.

It's an exciting week career wise for me. I had a new release from Ellora’s Cave Publishing last week. So far reader reaction to Beyond Shadows has been phenomenal.

Tomorrow I have a book releasing from Samhain Publishing. By The Book is the next Jamesville book and, like the last three, it's hot and spicy. I'm looking forward to hearing what readers have to say about it.

Hope you all had a great weekend and have a wonderful week.

Happy Monday!

I'm thrilled to announce that Beyond Shadows, my paranormal/shapeshifter book releases today from from Ellora’s Cave Publishing!

Beyond Shadows
N.J. Walters

This is a stand alone book, but it is a sequel to “Shadows Stir” from Dreams of the Oasis IV anthology.

An immortal warrior of the Shadow Realm, Blade’s self-control has been honed to a razor’s edge by centuries of fighting, but it vanishes the moment he lays eyes on Jacqueline Harris. The mere sight of her stirs his blood and he craves physical pleasures long forgotten.

Jac is an accountant, not a risk taker, preferring to live her life quietly. That all changes when she is sent to see a client by mistake and stumbles onto a crime ring. Now she’s on the run for her life.

The sexy stranger appears at her beach house, swearing to protect her at all costs. Dark and dangerous, he resembles the assassin she first fears he is. The last thing she expects is that he can morph into the deadly panther tattooed on his chest. The undeniable passion between them flares to life, but it is more than attraction. It is a soul-deep knowing that he will change her life forever. Blade becomes both protector and lover, but it’s up to her to save him from the shadows that haunt him.

Monday Update!

Good morning and welcome to Monday.

Last week got lost in the mists of time. LOL I've been having a hard time settling down with my latest project, but I'm hoping to make more headway this week. I'm 25K in, but I still don't feel like I've found my rhythm on this one yet.

This is an exciting week for me. I have a new release from Ellora's Cave--Beyond Shadows--on November 21st. I'm very excited about this paranormal/shapeshifter tale.

Other than that, life goes on as ususal. I've been getting my walk in most days, in spite of the rainy weather. Yesterday, I spent an hour or so wrapping Christmas presents. *g* I'm finished all my shopping, except for hubby. We keep things simple in our family, so it's not that hard to get it all done fairly quickly. Plus, there aren't that many of us to shop for.

Hope this week is a great one for all of you. What are your plans?

Remembrance Day

This is Remembrance Day in Canada and in many countries around the world. It is a day to be thankful for the freedoms we have and to remember those who gave their lives for it.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

— Lt.-Col. John McCrae

Monday, Monday...

So here it is Monday once again. I think the weeks are speeding up as the end of the year draws nearer.

What have I been up to this past week? Hmm...let's see. I started working on a new book. It's not a contracted work, just something I want to do. I've given myself to the end of the year to work on it before I have to switch back to writing books that actually pay the bills.

I've been walking and getting some exercise. The scales say I finally lost 5 pounds. That's a good thing! Unfortunately, it's the same 5 pounds I've been putting on and taking off since last Christmas. LOL I'm hoping this time it stays gone.

I also started my Christmas shopping. I have a small list and we don't give large presents, so I'm almost finished. I still have to work on getting something for my hubby. But I'm not worried about that. There's plenty of time yet.

That's pretty much what I've been up to over the past seven days. I've got two new books releasing later this month. That's very exciting. And if you haven't done it already, check out my new contest!

Have a fabulous Monday!

Ideas and Writing

I have what I think is a fabulous idea for a new book. Actually, it's going to be a series. The idea came to me, as most ideas do, when I wasn't looking for it. It was actually a combination of a couple of things that happened in a short span of time and they developed into an actual idea in my mind. (Don't ask--I'm superstitious and don't talk about my ideas until they become actual books.)

I was too busy to give it much time or thought when it occurred to me several months ago. I did make a first attempt at starting this new project a while ago, but didn't like the beginning. After weeks of pondering, I think I figured out what the problem was.

Now, I'm starting again. I'm hoping to salvage most of what I've already written, but the beginning will be new. I'm hoping it comes together this time. If not, I'll put it aside and let it perk. It's one of those ideas that I don't want to waste and I don't want to screw up by pushing too hard and fast. I'm going to take the rest of the year to work on it and see what happens.

It's not a book for any particular publisher. I want to just let this idea expand and become the book it needs to be. After that, I'll worry about finding a publisher for it.

In January, no matter what happens, it's back to regular scheduled writing. After all, ideas are fine, but folks got bills to pay. :-)

Have a great weekend!

Daylight Savings Time

Daylight Savings Time (DST) was first proposed by William Willett in the year 1907 as a way for people to enjoy more outdoor activities during certain times of the year.

His proposal didn't get much support, but that all changed during the the First World War. DST was promoted as a way to alleviate hardships from wartime coal shortages and air raid blackouts.

We still dutifully turn our clocks ahead in the spring and back in the fall, but does it really make a difference? Many studies would suggest that it doesn't--not in our day and age. There are no substantial fuel savings as, unlike our ancestors, we don't get up with the sun, nor go to bed when it goes down.

Our lives aren't as tied to the rise and fall of the sun. The malls are still full whether it's morning, afternoon or evening. And the extra hour of sunlight in the summer doesn't make a whit of difference to most of us as we go about our daily activities.

Personally, I think it's more habit than anything else that keeps us following DST. Many countries around the world no longer use it, and there is a portion that never have.

I could do without it.

How about you?

Chilly...I mean Chili Anyone?

The days have certainly turned colder. We had our first frost this week. Brrrrr!

So, I decided it was time to make a great big pot of vegetarian chili. Or as I like to call it, vitamins in a pot. LOL Chili is soooo good, but it's also very good for you.

Think about it--olive oil, garlic, green onions, celery, carrots, sweet peppers, crushed tomatoes, kidney beans, chilli powder, molasses, and mushrooms, all topped with grated cheese. YUM!

The nice thing about chilli is that you can make a huge pot of the stuff, enjoy a meal, and freeze the rest. I now have three meals of chili in the freezer.

What are some of your favorite cold-weather meals?

Monday, Monday!

Welcome to Monday.

Hubby and I have already been out for our 40 minute walk around the pond. It was beautiful this morning with the mist rising off the water, the colors of the leaves painting the trees and shrubs, and the invigorating crisp air wafting all about.

I promised myself when I started on my health kick that I would only weigh and measure myself once a month, and I've stuck to that promise. I've got 12 days until November 1st. My exercise has gone pretty good so far. My problem is that I eat my biggest meal in the evening. I'm not a night-time snacker, but I eat too much for supper. That's the next challenge. I'm going to cut back on the supper portions and see what happens.

Have a wonderful week.

What Season is it Anyway?

I was out shopping with my hubby this morning and noticed that the Halloween candy, costumes and decorations are now vying for space with Christmas stuff. I've noticed bits and pieces of Christmas decorations popping up in stores here and there, but this was full out Christmas. Walmart had several empty aisles lined with boxes and employees stacking boxes of lights and hanging ornaments on hooks.

Now, I love Christmas. Heck, I even bought a pack of Christmas cards this morning. Why? Because if you wait there won't be any left. Stores are getting earlier and earlier with the seasonal stuff. By the time Halloween arrives, there won't be any Halloween left in the stores. It will all be Christmas.

Don't get me wrong. I was in retail for 20 years, so I understand marketing. But, where I worked, we waited until November 1st to put up the Christmas decorations.

I wonder how we all survived years ago when stores actually waited for one season to be over before changing their displays. I miss it. Today's society is geared to always be looking ahead rather than to be enjoying where we are.

By the time Christmas arrives the Valentines will be on the shelves!

I've packed away the Christmas cards and plan on enjoying the fall/Halloween season to the fullest for the next two weeks. I only hope I'll remember where I put the Christmas cards when I need them.

Quote of the Week!

I thougth this was a great quote!

"Every smile makes you a day younger;
every sigh a day older."

~Chinese proverb

So rather than spend a fortune at the drugstore on creams and potions, just smile more. You'll feel better. Even if you don't look younger, you'll feel younger. Either way, I figure it can't hurt.

Have a wonderful day!

Interview!

Check out my guest interview over at Alyssa Brook's website.

Blade, the character from my upcoming Ellora’s Cave Publishing release, BEYOND SHADOWS, is featured in the Slip Between the Sheets feature.

This is actually the second story featuring the immortal Shadow Ryders. The first one was "Shadows Stir" in the Ellora’s Cavemen: Dreams of the Oasis IV Anthology. Each is a stand alone book, but they are connected.

Monday, Monday!

Since yesterday was a holiday for me, my Monday update is happening on Tuesday. LOL

It was a fairly busy week last week. I did edits for a quickie for Ellora's Cave that should be out sometime next year. I'm making slow, but steady progress on my work-in-progress. I'm refusing to give up on it.

Still pushing with the exercise even though I'm not seeing any results. I'm going to have to cut back on the food. My problem is I eat too much for supper. I'm not an evening snacker, but my biggest meal of the day is usually around 6 pm. I'm going to start trying to cut some portions there, keep up the exercise and see what happens.

Have a fabulous week!

Monday, Monday!

It's been about a month since I started my new plan to find some balance in my life, the first step of which was getting more exercise.

So far, so good.

I'm getting in 5 or 6 walks a week and doing a half hour of yoga about 5 times a week. Slacked off on the pushups and sit ups and such, so I need to get back to doing those. I feel better. I have more energy, especially in the afternoons, which is my downtime.

Now if only the scales would shift in a downward direction.

I weighed in for the first time in a month and was barely down at all. It was discouraging for a few minutes, but I reminded myself that it had to be doing my health some good. I'm going to keep at it and hope for the best on November 1st when I weigh in again.

Welcome to Monday and another work week.

Hope it's a good one.

Cinderella

Last night hubby and I took in a local theatre production of Cinderella. Not quite the disney version, but a lot of fun nonetheless.

I love watching the kids in the audience--the little ones, not the big ones like me. There were two little girls sitting not far from us and they were totally enthralled. One of them even had a three-foot plush Cinderella doll, which she sat in the chair next to her.

What is it about this story we all love?

Is it the castle? The magic? The hope? The happily Ever After?
Does it really matter?

The story is a timeless one where the wicked are punished and the good guys win. It is also a love story, probably one of the earliest ones many of us were exposed to as children.

Yes, I have problems with certain parts of the storyline, but that's neither here nor there.

What is important is that last night I sat in a dark theatre with a group of adults and children and allowed myself to be swept away by the magic. Sure there were some technical difficulties in the show, but the performances were wonderful.

All in all, it was a great way to spend an evening.

Monday, Monday...

Welcome to Monday!

Last week was an exciting one. Getting a release date for Beyond Shadows means I have two e-books (Beyond Shadows from Ellora's Cave and By the Book by Samhain Publishing) and one print book (The Seduction of Shamus O'Rourke) due out in November. It's going to be an exciting month.

I'm working on putting the finishing touches on my October newsletter, which is due out on Wednesday. Still no column from hubby, but he ususally waits until the last minute to write it.

I'm also still keeping up with my new exercise program. I'm managing to get in at least 5 forty-minute walks and I did my half-hour yoga tape five days last week. I'm just hoping I can keep it up.

I plan to weigh myself on October 1st. I promised myself I'd only check my weight once a month so I didn't drive myself crazy. No matter what the scales say, I figure all the walking and exercising has to be doing me some good.

Hope you all have a wonderful week!

Banned Book Week

September 27 to October 4, 2008 is Banned Book Week.

What is Banned Book Week?

Taken from the Banned Book Week Organization Website:

Banned Books Week: Celebrating the Freedom to Read!

"Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than a thousand books have been challenged since 1982. The challenges have occurred in every state and in hundreds of communities. People challenge books that they say are too sexual or too violent. They object to profanity and slang, and protest against offensive portrayals of racial or religious groups--or positive portrayals of homosexuals. Their targets range from books that explore the latest problems to classic and beloved works of American literature."

Check out more information at http://www.bannedbooksweek.org/

Why is Banned Book Week important?

Intellectual freedom must be maintained as a basic human right. No one should have the right to tell someone else what they can and cannot read. That is a right every adult should have. Parents have the right to make those choices for their children without someone else telling them it is wrong. It is a personal choice.

Here's a small sampling of some of books that have been challenged and/or banned:

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
The Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

And the list goes on and on and on.

While I may not want to read every book on the challenged or banned lists, I want the right to be able to do so. That means these books need to be available in libraries around the country and the world.

Show your support for Banned Book Week by picking up a book that has been challenged or banned and reading it. It's your right.

Welcome To Autumn

Welcome to Autumn!

Fall is actually my favorite time of year. I love the crisp, sunny days and the way the leaves turn color. Then there is Thanksgiving and Halloween--two wonderful holidays!

I'm not fond of the fact that it means winter is almost here, but I enjoy autumn for what it is--a time of change, endings and new beginnings.

On this first day of fall, I can say that I'm still on track with my program to get more exercise and try and find some balance in my life. It's not easy, but I'm hanging in there. I went for about five long walks last week and got in four days with my yoga workout tape. Not too bad. Now if I could only cut back on the junk food...

This week's challenge will be to keep it up. Weeks 1 & 2 were filled with excitement and hope, but by week three that is tapering off and it's harder to keep on exercising. But I'm determined.

Wish me luck!

Tagline Contest!

Do you want a chance to win a copy of my newest print book, Enticements?

This two-book anthology contains Capturing Carly and Craving Candy, books 3 & 4 of the Awakening Desires series now available in e-book from Ellora's Cave.

All you have to do to have a chance to win is comment on this blog post.

What's it all about--taglines. Those little lines that writers have after their name to help readers identify with their work.

There are some wonderful ones out there like: Get into bed with Delilah Devlin...everyone else has. OR Where there's fire, there's Ash (Ashlyn Chase)

Some authors use their names in their tagline, while others are just downright creative.

I've used:
Awaken your desires with N.J. Walters
Awaken your desires...
and
Emotional, Sensual, Satisfying Reads!

Do you like any of these? Can you come up with something you think better describes my books?

Give it a try. No matter if I keep one of my old taglines or use one of the ones suggested, I'll be giving away that print copy of ENTICMENTS. I'll be leaving this contest open for a few days to give folks a chance to enter. I'll announce the winner something this weekend.

Good luck and thanks for the input.

*YOU MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER TO ENTER*

A New Beginning--Update

So last Monday I said I was making a new beginning to bring some much needed balance to my life. That, of course, also included exercise.

Can we say sore. LOL

Last Tuesday and Wednesday every part of me hurt. My poor body was screaming at me, asking what the heck I thought I was doing. Thursday and Friday weren't much better, but I am determined. Being healthy and balanced is the goal.

So far exercise is the main thing I've managed to change but there have been a few other smaller changes.

One of these smaller, but significant, changes is the fact that I'm in the midst of editing a manuscript and not working on it every waking hour. Usually I dive in and drive myself until the book is edited. Not this time. This time I actually did a bit of work on it on Sunday, but didn't really start it until this morning. Today, I paced myself, taking breaks and finally stopping work just before hubby got home.

And I'm not working on it tonight. I figure it will still be there tomorrow.

That's a huge change for me, but a much healthier attitude. I'm trying to take a new view of my writing career. But that's a subject for another day.

Hope you had a fabulous Monday!

The Second Anniversary

Hubby and I celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary back in August.

But there is a second anniversary that we celebrate. It marks the day we offically started dating, which was only a week after we met. This September 10th marks 25 years together. It's hard to believe that so many years have gone by so quickly.

Like all couples, we've had our ups and downs. We've laughed and cried. We've taken steps forward and back. But I wouldn't change any of it.

I'm looking forward to the next 25 years. :-)

A New Beginning

I've talked from time to time about trying to find balance in my life. It's something that I think most of us struggle with in this busy world we live in. There are so many demands on our time from work to family to children and spouses to community involvement...it's neverending.

It's easy to let things like exercise, eating right and general happiness slip to the wayside in the business of living. We all do it. I know I have.

Since I started working from home as a full-time writer three years ago I've definitely let a lot of my good habits slide. When you work from home it's easy to always be working. Or when I'm not working, I feel guilty about it.

Sitting in a desk chair for so many hours a day has had a predictable result--an extra 10 pounds and a lot less flexability.

So, I've begun to change that.

The plan is to incorporate my yoga DVDs into my life once again, along with some light weights and your ususal ab exercises and push ups. Besides that, I'm hoping to get out walking more. I used to walk a lot, but haven't done much of that lately.

Then there's food. I love to eat. LOL And that won't change. I won't cut things out of my diet because that's just not sustainable. What I can do is downsize portions and cut back on how many times a week I have dessert. I'm lucky that fried foods are not my weakness. It's sweets and chocolate...especially chocolate.

I'm not so concerned about what the scale says as I am about feeling healthy again. I don't want to wait until I have a health crisis to make myself change.

So here's to new beginnings.

Wish me luck!

Week in Review

The thing about being a writer is that you never know what's going to happen in any given week. It's exciting, fun, and sometimes frustrating. But it's never boring.

In the past week, I put out my September newsletter, with a great interview with author Denise Agnew. I did some promo work, finalized details for an ad in the December issue of RT magazine, and started planning my promotional materials for next year's Romantic Times convention.

I also finished my latest WIP, a sequel to my novella Amethyst Moon. I'm crossing my fingers that my editor will like it.

Then there was the new cover for my upcoming Samhain Publishing release--By The Book. It's awesome!

Because it was the beginning of the month and I had a newsletter releasing and a new book cover, I had to do some major updates on my website. I'm not a very techno-savvy person, but I can cut and paste with the best of them. LOL That and fill in the blanks.

Besides that, there was normal living. Dust had to be beaten back, floors vaccumed, bathroom cleaned, dishes washed, and errands run. Hubby does the laundry and we share the groceries and cooking, so that's okay.

My sister was here for an overnight stay as well. My oven died the night before she arrived and it was gone for two days before the repair guy actually showed up. That meant I had to wait around the house all day Thursday and Friday. Thankfully, he showed up around 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon and it was an easy repair. I have an oven for the weekend! Woohoo!

That's this week in a nutshell. I wonder what will happen this coming week?

What was your week like?

Plots!

Over at one of the yahoo groups I belong to, some of the people were talking about plot. Specifically, the fact that some authors use the same plot over and over again.

Does this happen a lot?

Sure it does. But some readers actually like knowing what kind of book their going to get from an author. They've made their careers on a basic plot. It's the characters that keep the readers coming back.

Most authors try to mix up their plot lines to create something new every time. It's not always easy. And sometimes an author will set up "rules" (such as in my Tapestries series) and you have to work around them. That means that there are certain things you can and cannot do. Of course, as an author, you can always change some of the rules or find away around them. *g* That's part of the fun.

I think there are room for both kinds of books out there. There are several authors I could name that have been writing for several decades who have made their careers on one single plot. Does that stop readers from buying the books? No! Becuase readers are more concerned with the characters and how they get through their problem to reach their happily-ever-after.

What do you think?

5 Stars for Jackson's Jewel

JERR (Just Erotic Romance Reviews) has given Jackson’s Jewel a 5 Star rating.

Here's a bit of what the reviewer, Mahaira Fatima, has to say:

"I love how Ms. Walters has interspersed suspenseful twists in the sensual tale. The meaty plot is emotion-packed,which is something I could easily sink my teeth into...It is lovely to sit down with a good book and simply the enjoy the characters but Ms. Walters has brought the story to life with her description of thescenery around Jackson’s farm and his passion about nature. I enjoyed this book so much that I went to find other books in the Awakening Desires series as soon as I finished the fifth installment. Awakening Desires 5: Jackson'sJewel is an excellent choice for an empty afternoon."

Something New!

Like most people, I tend to allow my life to get in a rut sometimes. We all do it. We go to the same stores and restaurants. Visit the same coffee shop at the same time each week. It's easy to do because we're all so busy and our lives so scheduled.

Part of my new pact with myself is to shake things up a bit.

Today hubby and I went to a new restaurant. The shameful thing is that we've had gift certificates for this place for almost a year. They were given to us by a friend for our anniversary last August, and have been languishing in my purse ever since.

The restaurant was small and privately owned...no big chain restaurant. Some of the walls were stone as the building is old. The atmosphere intimate, but fun and lively. The food--vegetarian fare--was delicious.

We had a wonderful time. And even better was the fact that it cost us the price of a tip. We'll probably go back again sometime in the future.

What have you done new lately?

Quote of the Week!

"There are some books that refuse to be written. They stand their ground year after year and will not be persuaded. It isn't because the book is not there and worth being written -- it is only because the right form of the story does not present itself. There is only one right form for a story and if you fail to find that form the story will not tell itself."

~Mark Twain

Every writer knows that sometimes you have to put an idea or a partial WIP aside and let it sit for a while. Even though you might want to write the book, the time just isn't right. When a book is meant to be written, the ideas flow. The actual writing may still be hard at times, but the author knows that they can get through that if it's time for the story to be told.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a book is to step aside for a while and let it percolate a bit longer. :-)

The Value of Books

I was standing in the line-up at the local bookstore the other day waiting to pay for my purchase when I overheard a conversation.

Lady 1: Books are so expensive.

Lady 2: I know. Once you've read them what do you do with them? What good are they?

Needlesss to say, I was appalled. Why is it people hate paying approximately $8 to $12 for a regular sized paperback? They have no problem shelling out $2 to $3 for designer coffees and we all know what happens to them once you drink them.

They also have no problem shelling out $10 or more for a movie ticket. You do that for an hour and a half to two hours of entertainment in the movie theatre. When you add snacks and the fact that most people don't go to the movies alone, the cost sneaks even higher.

People will easily drop a $10 bill at a fast food restaurant. You'll be hungry again in a few hours. Yet most people don't complain about that. Maybe it's because food feeds the body.

Books feed more than the body, they feed the soul. They can entertain, inform, and take you places you've never been before. They can make you laugh, cry or sigh with pleasure. They can also take you away from your worrries and the stress of everyday living for a few hours.

Unlike a movie in a theate, a coffee, or a take-out order, when you're finished reading a book you still have it. It sits on the bookshelf, like an old friend, waiting to be read again. You can lend your favorite paperback to a friend. Even if you want to sell, donate or trash your paperback, (shudder) you've had an entertaining experience.

So in my humble opinion books are worth the cost. I've read thousands over the years, and although I haven't kept them all, I still have shelves jammed full of them. And you can be certain that some day this coming week, I'll be heading off the local bookstore to find a new one to add to the bookshelf.

08-08-08

Today is one of those very special days on the calendar. 08-08-08 is thought to be a very lucky day in many cultures and more than a few weddings have been planned for today.

This also marks the beginning of the Olympic Games. While there has been much controversy surrounding the host country of China, I am looking forward to the events themselves. The Olympic Games are filled with stories of inspiration and hope.

I'm off to watch the opening ceremonies.

Have a wonderful day.

Lord of the Rings

In a summer of blockbuster movies, some of which delivered and some of which did not, my hubby and I found ourselves reaching for an old favorite the other day.
*
Starting on a rainy Sunday afternoon, we took out the LOTR--The Fellowship of the Ring. Monday, we watched The Two Towers. And on Tuesday, we finished off with The Return of the King.
*
No matter how many times I see these movies I'm shocked by just how good they are. When you finish it, you're wondering just how soon you can find the time to watch it again. The story, the action, the depth of the characters, the unexpected humor, the horror, all combine to make these some of the best movies ever made.
*
Do you have any movies that you like to take out and watch again and again?
*
Hubby and I have seasonal movies we like to watch, but these are some of the few non-seasonal movies that we have to watch at least once a year.

4.5 Blue Ribbons for A Legal Affair

A Legal Affair just received a 4.5 Blue Ribbon Rating from Romance Junkies.
*
Here's a bit of what the reviewer had to say:
*
"N.J. Walters has another winner with A LEGAL AFFAIR, the fifth in her Jamesville series…The love scenes are passionate, and from the moment you start reading Alicia and Gill’s story, the sexual tension holds you and never lets you go.

A LEGAL AFFAIR is another view of small town life, with its lust for gossip, thirst for the worst, and unforgiving attitude. Readers will enjoy the twists and turns Ms. Walters takes with her story, and at the end of the book, I truly wished I could have stayed with Alicia and Gill a little longer.”

Holiday Pictures!

Me at the Beach!

Me, still at the Beach!

All these photos were taken near my sister's place.

This was a long trek up to a lookout, but the walk was well worth it.
