The castle rose up out of the base of the mountain that loomed behind it like a hulking protector. Dark gray stones shone in the afternoon sun. A huge wall ringed the castle. Beyond it were smaller huts with thatched roofs. There were fields in the distance with some sort of crops and several pens with sheep and chickens.

Wherever she was, she sure wasn’t in Texas.

“Carn?” a loud male voice called in the distance.

The animal tilted back its head and howled. The chilling sound raced down her spine. He sounded like a wolf. Come to think of it, he looked something like one too. She slowly released her arms, pulling them back to her sides. The animal gave a low whine as if he wasn’t happy with her.

Just before oblivion claimed her she felt herself being lifted and held against a broad, masculine chest. In spite of the cold, heat radiated from him and she snuggled closer. The one coherent thought she had was that she was safe now. She’d been found.

A sound caught his ears and he cocked his head to one side, listening intently. He heard it again. A low groan followed by the sound of fabric shuffling. Someone was in here.

Radnor strode silently down the aisle, hand on the pommel of his sword, checking each stall as he went. It was probably one of the stable boys, but he wanted to be certain. Most of the stalls were empty, but a few had bales of hay stacked inside, ready to be spread as bedding for the horses. In the last stall on the left, he found his intruder.

He froze, unable to believe his eyes. Lying on a stack of hay bales was a woman wearing a garment of the most striking color he’d ever seen. It was almost blinding in its intensity. Her slender legs were bare. The bottom of her unusual dress was pushed above her knees. Most of her arms were exposed, as was a wide swath just above her breasts. Something metal glinted down the center of her garment when she shifted.

Her lips parted on a low groan, freeing Radnor from his stupor. He opened the gate and stepped into the stall. Her hair barely touched her nape and was as black as the night. Her lips were rosy and full, begging to be kissed. Her cheekbones were high, her nose straight.

He frowned, his eyes narrowing as he noted the pallor of her skin. He moved closer and the faintest scent of flowers wafted before him. Recognition hit him full force. He knew this woman. Knew the feel of her skin beneath his palms, the scent of her body when she was aroused, the full shape of her ample breasts and the strength of her supple limbs. She was the woman from his dream.

Her eyelids fluttered open and she stared up at him. Her eyes were gray, the same color as a morning mist over the lake. She blinked once, opened her mouth and screamed.

A brilliant light flashed in the room. For a second, Kathryn wondered if this wasn’t what it felt like when you died. But the moment passed and she was still very much in this world. She blinked and half stood, unable to believe her eyes.

“Kill the men. Spare the woman,” the General ordered. “She’s mine.”

 

The man took in the room at a glance, his eyes widening when he saw her. Swiftly, he turned back to the threat and attacked. His great sword cut through the men like a hot knife through butter. As she watched, two bloody heads rolled toward the bed. Using the distraction to their advantage, both Tienan and Logan dove for the other weapons, bringing them up and firing. Both her father and the General dove through the door, but they weren’t in time. She heard her father screaming in pain and the General yelling at him to shut up.

 

The stranger swung around and leapt over the bed, landing by her side. “You are unhurt?”

 

His accent was strange, but she understood him perfectly. “Yes.” She raised her hands to his face. He seemed so familiar. She blinked, taking in his bare chest, the arm and wristbands and the long brown hair that fell down his back. “Marc?” This was impossible. Marc was nothing but a character from a book, a figment from her dreams.

 

He flashed her a grin. “Kathryn.”
