Welcome to Read An E-book Week! It's amazing how much the world of books has changed in such a short span of time. Although the E-book has been around for a lot longer than most folks think, the phenomena has really taken off over the past few years. The publishing industry started to change about ten years ago with the onset of the first on-line publishers and they haven't looked back since.
I discovered ebooks back in 2004 and began publishing with Ellora's Cave and, later, Samhain Publishing. E-book publishers opened the doors of the publishing world for many wonderful writers and has allowed readers to access all kinds of books that might otherwise never have seen the light of day. Traditonal publishers only have a limited amount of slots to fill each year, while online publishers have no limit. Tradional publishers sometimes won't try new genres simply because they don't know how to market them or they don't fit within their publishing parameters. Online publishers can more easily try new authors and genres. With the rising popularity of the Kindle (thank you Oprah), the Sony Reader, the Ipad, and various other electronic reading devices, the E-book is here to stay.
Onlike a lot of folks, I don't think this has to mean the end of the traditional print book. I love reading both. I have a Sony reader as well as bookshelves filled with books. Readers love books...in every form.
So here's to the E-book! If you haven't tried one yet, maybe it's time you did.
