Serious about Series

My name is N.J. and I am a series junkie.

No, really. I love reading series books. I think it's the familiarity of the characters and the place. Plus, I really enjoy getting a peek at the lives of characters who have come before. Series have so much more depth, building on what has come before and allow an author to spend time with a certain group of characters.

Harlequin, Silhouette, Loveswept and many of the other "category" romance companies produced many beloved series over the years. Who can forget the Mackenzie's by Linda Howard or the Conard County series by Rachel Lee or Beverly Barton, who continues to give us the Protectors series.

Many authors who have switched genres and gone on to write mysteries produced amazing series early in their careers. Iris Johansen gave us the Sedikhan series, while Kay Hooper gave us a series surrounding the mysterious Hagan.

That's not even mentioning the many fabulous series out there today. I am continually waiting for the next J. R. Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood book, the next Janet Chapman Highlanders book and the next Stephanie Plum story from Janet Evanovich. And don't even get me started on books by my fellow writers at Ellora's Cave and Samhain. There are not enough hours in the day to read them all!

As an author, I have fallen into the habit of writing series. Even books that began as stand-alone stories somehow find themselves as part of series. Christina's Tapestry was meant to be one book. But the moment I wrote the Bakra brothers, I knew I'd have to write their books as well. And judging by the amount of email I received, you weren't ready to let this series go either. Then there is the Dalakis Passion vampire series, Summerville Secrets, Jamesville, Awakening Desires...you get my drift.

It can get very confusing at times. LOL But I wouldn't have it any other way. I find it hard to let go of a series. With each new book there are more characters and I find myself wondering about their story. That always gets the creative juices flowing. I have enough work for the next three years if I do nothing but write books for charcters who have already appeared in my published works. *g* Not that I'm complaining.

What are some of your favorite series?

I started out with those early Linda Howard, Kay Hooper, and Iris Johanson series books too. Just gave away my old Loveswept books last month. Some of my favorites are Sookie Stackhouse, Eve Dallas, Stephanie Plum, Lora Leigh has some great ones and Sarah McCarty too. Then of course, I love your Dalaskis Bros. I love series books and have lists of author's that I auto buy.

I had to get rid of mine about ten years ago when we made a big move and I regret it. I haven't been able to find a lot of them again. I love the Eve Dallas series too!

I'm so glad you enjoy the Dalakis brothers. :-)

My old Loveswepts disappeared on my last move. I gave about 20 boxes away to the county jail. The only consolation is imagining the inmates reading Iris Johanson and Sandra Brown!

Between you and cathy you named most of my favorites. Also Elizabeth Lowell and Jayne Ann Krentz's fantasy series. Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series. Brian Jacques' Redwall series. Raymond E. Feist's Midkemia series. John D. MacDonal's Travis Magee series... can you tell that I like series?

I have a ton so I will try to just name a few. Your Tapestry and Dalakis series.:-)

Christine Feehan's Carpathian, Ghostwalker and Drake Sisters series.

The Betsy series by MJ Davidson

The Sookie series by Charlaine Harris.

The Psychic Eye series by Victoria Laurie.

The Real Vampires series by Gerry Bartlett.

The Atlantis series by Gena Showalter.

The Warriors of Poseidon series by Alyssa Day.

And that is just to name a few. I LOVE stories that don't end after one book.

Hey, Anny. I love JAK. I used to have almost all her books before one fateful move, including her MacFadden romances. *sigh* She's the author that really got me into reading romance.

Hey, Kathy. I'm thrilled that you enjoy both the Tapestry and the Dalakis Passion series.

I love all Christine Feehan's series. I've been reading her books since the very first one. It wasn't easy to find her books back then. I used to have to nag the bookstores to get them.

I love series. Love, love, love them. And I won't list them all here because I'd break your comments by exceeding the character limit, but I've noticed my favorite authors tend to write series, and I'm always right there to buy the next installment!

So true. Funny I wrote about this a few days ago on my blog. I'm a series Junkie too. Love Linda Howard, Janet Evanovich and all of them. Love revisiting the characters.

Guess that’s why I love to write series.

I know what you mean, Charli. I went to the bookstore today and came back with two books from series. I got the new Cherry Adair T-Flac book and the next Janet Chapman Highlander book.

Love the series, too! Love the SEAL Team 10 and 16 by Suz Brockmann, as well as many of the ones already mentioned! Plus, I do love your series, and several other EC and Samhain authors' series. Another one I've been raving about recently is the Hearts of the South by Linda Winfree - I think she's a marvelous writer.
