EARTH DAY

April 22 is Earth Day, a day to focus on the environment and the world in which we live.

Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed the first nationwide environmental protest in 1970 "to shake up the political establishment and force this issue onto the national agenda."

On that day, people came together for the first time in a large, organized group to fight for the world in which we all live. We still have a long way to go to turn back the damage we've done and continue to do, but I'd like to think we're making progress.

Disney's movie, EARTH, is opening on April 22nd. It follows three families of animals--elephants, polar bears and whales as they make their way in the world. Check out more at http://disney.go.com/disneynature/earth/. Disney has promised to plant at least a half million trees, if not more with the proceeds.

I think we're all a little more conscious these days about our world. I don't run water while I'm brushing my teeth. I take cloth bags to the supermarket. I choose green cleaning products. I turn off any lights not absolutely necessary. I've changed all my lightbulbs to low energy ones. I use cold water for the laundry. Little steps, but if we all do them, they make a huge difference.

So, celebrate Earth Day, 2009. We need to take care of this little blue planet. It's the only home we have.

I use cloth bags that are recycled from soda bottles. I also make my own hats and scarves from yarn that is also recycled from soda bottles. Except when cooking, I only keep on lights in the room I am in. I don't drive but instead use public transportation when it's too far to walk somewhere. I have a water saver toilet and I use energy saver light bulbs. It's not much, but as you said if everyone does it it would make a huge difference.

All those are fabulous ways to help, Kathy. Every thing we can do makes a difference.

I make hats and scarves for my family as well and I like to tease them that they are wearing soda bottles on their heads.:-) But, for every bolt of yarn, ten soda bottles don't end up in landfills. I like that idea. By the way, I blogged about you today NJ. Have a great Wednesday.

*g* I'm sure you're family loves the scarves and hats. It's very cool when you think about it.

Thank you so much for the kind words on your blog. You're always so supportive of my writing and I appreciate that!

It's easy to support your writing because you are a sensational writer.

Every change helps. I keep forgetting my canvas groc. bags; I think I need to start keeping them in the car.
