Writer's Wednesday

Genres!

Love 'em or hate 'em, they're a big part of romance writing.

We all have certain genres we love to read and others we wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. Okay, maybe it's not quite that bad, but it would take a very special book or author to make us read some genres.

I'm lucky enough to be able to write in a variety of genres. I write contemporary romance for Samhain Publishing and erotic romance (contemporary, vampire, paranormal, shapeshifter, time-travel, and menage a trois) for Ellora's Cave.

Personally, I enjoy reading paranormal, vampire, contemporary and historical romance (especially Regency and Medieval). I don't mind if the sex is mild or if it's a full-blown erotic romance.

What genres do you favor most? Why?

Paranormal or Sci-Fi erotic romance! I love to read and write within these genres because it's so imaginative. You can go anywhere you want to go with the right story.

I write mostly fantastical romance because you're allowed to "stretch" the imagination while still staying within the comfort zone of most readers.

I love to read almost anything except horror. Have enough horror in life without having to read about it.

Normally I'd say paranormal or SF erotic or steamy romance, but I just read three contemporaries that blew my doors off. So obviously I love 'em all. *ggg*

My favorite is paranormal. At one time, I used to only read historicals, but I do read almost all subgenres in romance.

I enjoy the freedom with paranormals too, Laura. The possibilities are endless. I've never written a Sci-Fi though.

It's funny how taste changes over time, Anny. When I was a teenager, I could read horror. As an adult, no way.

Fantasy definitely allows you to stretch your imagination. That's what makes it so fun to write and to read.

LOL I'm with you, Charli. There's very little I won't at least try at least once.

I think we all go through stages, Melissa. I get in moods where all I want to read is paranormal. A month later, I might be into historical romance. Depends on my mood and sometimes what's in the bookstore that looks good.

As long as there is romance involved, I'm not so picky about genre... fantasy, historical, suspense or whatever. Just give me a hot guy and a HEA and you won't hear me complain.

I love to read just about anything in romance/erotic romance genre except horror

I'm with you, Marianne. A Hot guy and a HEA and I'm pretty happy.

I don't want to read anything too much in the horror genre either, Kelly, not when it's mixed with romance. I don't mind paranormals and vampires, but nothing too gruesome.

Paranormals seem to be among peoples favorite genre, Kate. You're in good company. :-)
