Teaser: The Seduction of Shamus O'Rourke

Shamus O'Rourke, from my Jamesville series, is one of my all-time favorite heroes. There is just something so special about him. The Seduction of Shamus O'Rourke was a turning point in my career in many ways. It was the first book at Samhain Publishing that I worked on with editor Heidi Shoham. We would go on to work together the next decade and dozens of books.

While I've worked with about a dozen amazing editors over the course of my career and have learned from each and every one, my working relationship with Heidi was special. I miss working with her.

I'm grateful to Entangled Romance for republishing my contemporary romance series and allowing new readers to find Shamus.

TEASER: THE SEDUCTION OF SHAMUS O'ROURKE

“A woman alone can’t be too careful these days.” His words echoed her earlier thoughts. “You stay put in the car and I’ll take care of that flat tire for you.”

“No,” she snapped. Realizing what she’d done, she softened her tone. After all, it wasn’t his fault she was attracted to him. All he’d done was stop and offer to help. “That’s fine. I’ll take care of it myself.”

He scrubbed his hand across his jaw and her eyes followed the action. She could see the five o’clock shadow on his chin. It made him appear even sexier, if that was possible. There was something elemental about this man. Even dressed in old work boots, faded jeans and a dirty T-shirt, there was an air of barely restrained power about him.

“I figured you could handle the problem on your own, ma’am, but there’s no need for that now that I’m here.”

Was he for real?

She guessed so when he turned on his heel and crouched down by the front tire. Within seconds, the front of the car was raised and he was using the tire iron to loosen the lug nuts.

Throwback Thursday--Discovering Dani

THROWBACK THURSDAY--Discovering Dani.

Here are some fun facts:

Did you know that Discovering Dani was the first book I ever wrote? It wasn't my first published--that was Annabelle Lee, now published as Uncovering Annabelle.

It's the first book in my Jamesville contemporary romance series.

It was originally written with the Silhouette Romance line in mind.

I wrote it in 1996.

I rewrote it many times and finally found a home for it with Samhain Publishing. When Samhain closed it found a home with Entangled Publishing.

I wrote The Way Home right after, so they were the first two books I ever wrote. Annabelle Lee came after that. So Discovering Dani and The Way Home are "sweeter" in tone than the rest of the series and the rest of my books.

Discovering Dani

Jamesville, Book 1

Dani O'Rourke is no stranger to hard work. She’s been raising her two brothers alone since their parents died and she owns and operates her own business, O’Rourke Cleaning Services. Spending all her time working and looking after her family means she’s never had time for men. And if she was going to look for a relationship, it wouldn’t be with an arrogant and cynical man like Burke.

A brush with death has successful businessman Burke questioning his priorities. He’s come to Jamesville for some peace and quiet to figure out what to do with the rest of his life. Catching a woman breaking into his cabin certainly isn’t part of his plan, nor is being attracted to her after her finds out just how wrong he was about her.

Burke finds himself caught up in Dani’s family, but is there room in such a gentle woman’s life for a man as hard as him?

Throwback Thursday--Discovering Dani

This book is special to me because it's the first one I ever wrote. I started back in the fall of 1995. Where has the time gone?

Spending all her time working and looking after her family means she’s never had time for men. And if she was going to look for a relationship, it wouldn’t be with an arrogant and cynical man like Burke.

A brush with death has successful businessman Burke questioning his priorities. He’s come to Jamesville for some peace and quiet to figure out what to do with the rest of his life. Burke finds himself caught up in Dani’s family, but is there room in such a gentle woman’s life for a man as hard as him?

EXCERPT:

Dani pictured the stranger in her mind’s eye, wondering who he was. Born and raised in Jamesville, she knew everyone, if not personally, then by sight. She suspected he was probably visiting friends or just passing through.

What does it matter to you? She scolded herself impatiently. A man like that would never notice a woman like her. Her hair was a plain medium brown that was usually worn in a no-nonsense braid that fell to her waist, and she’d never had the money or the inclination to wear makeup. Her few attempts at mascara and eyeliner had left her feeling more like a raccoon than a model. Somehow, she never felt quite right if she was wearing anything more than lip-gloss.

She could still picture his coal black hair, damp and shining from the falling snow. Eyes almost as black as his hair, snapping with impatience, as he’d issued his commands. An aura of power and arrogance had surrounded him as he’d barked his orders with no doubt that they would be followed.

Of course, she reasoned, he had the size to back it up. He was built like a mountain, tall and broad, with a face that looked as if it were carved from stone. A long jagged scar had bisected his left cheek. Dani thought it gave him the dangerous air of a pirate or a highwayman. Just like the unsuspecting hero in a romance novel, she mused.

“Stop it, Dani O’Rourke,” she muttered as she reached her truck and dug into her pocket for her keys. “He thought you were a man, for heaven’s sake.” But she could understand why. At five-foot-eight, she was a tall woman and solidly built. Not overweight, but sturdy. Wearing her brother’s hand-me-down parka that zipped around her face and covered her to her knees, well, it was no wonder he had mistaken her for a male. She consoled herself even as she wondered why the thought made her head hurt.

She had wasted enough time, lusting for things she could not have. There was work to do. It was the same lecture she had been scolding herself with for the past seven years, ever since her mother died and she became sole guardian of her brothers. If it sounded a little flat, well, that was just too bad, she told herself as she unlocked the door to her truck and prepared herself to face the rest of the day.

Tuesday Teaser: Past Promises

Here's a teaser from Past Promises, part of my Jamesville contemporary romance series.

He stood just behind her. Watching. Waiting.

She had no idea how long he’d been there. It should have been impossible for a man his size to sneak up on her. At six-and-a-half feet tall, Levi Mann took up a lot of space. His body was massive, but it was all solid muscle. There wasn’t an ounce of fat on the man.

He was wearing his usual uniform of jeans and a T-shirt. The faded denim clung to his thick thighs like a second skin. The soft cotton of the shirt molded to his biceps and chest, leaving little to the imagination.

And she had imagined him. A lot.

Lying in bed late at night, Linda had wondered more than once what it would feel like to touch all that sculpted muscle. She knew what it looked like. Levi had helped her with much of the renovation work on the building, as well as the painting, often removing his shirt while he worked. She’d lost count of the number of times she’d stopped painting just to stare at him while he was working. Levi gave new meaning to the phrase abs of steel. His tanned flesh looked as though it was pulled tight over slabs of muscle.

And the man was just as potent from behind. He had wide shoulders that tapered down to his thick waist, the muscles making a perfect V. His butt was first class all the way.

“Linda?” The way he said her name gave her shivers. “Are you okay?”

Oh, God. She was standing here like a ninny, staring at him again. “I’m fine.”

Throwback Thursday--The Seduction of Shamus O'Rourke

I love all my books, but some are more special than others. I have to admit, I have a soft spot for this book. It's a reminder that things aren't always what they seem to be. Sometimes you don't know the whole story. And I just love Shamus!

The Seduction of Shamus O’Rourke
Jamesville, Book 4

Her father's death has brought Cyndi Marks back to Jamesville, and she's determined to settle back in her hometown and lay her ghosts to rest once and for all. But not everyone is happy to see her. Every small town has secrets, and Jamesville has secrets some would kill to protect. When Cyndi needs help, there's only one person in town she can trust.

Shamus O'Rourke is happy living in Jamesville. He loves his job, his family, and small town living. All that's missing is someone to share it with. When he runs into Cyndi and helps her with a flat tire, he's drawn to the reserved, wary woman. He's pretty sure the feeling is mutual, even though she tries to deny it.

When Cyndi's life is threatened, just about everyone in town is a suspect, and she's not sure her fledgling relationship with Shamus can stand up to the town and his family's concerns. The only thing she is sure of is that she can't see herself surviving in Jamesville without the younger man.

Questions about my Release Schedule for 2017

I’ve been getting a lot of questions and emails concerning my Salvation Pack series and other Samhain books. As many of you know, Samhain Publishing closed at the end of February and all their books were pulled from sale.

But I have signed with Entangled Publishing to bring back my entire Samhain backlist, including the Jamesville series, Legacy series, Spells, Secrets and Seductions trilogy, Hades’ Carnival series, and of course, the Salvation Pack.

Here’s my Entangled Publishing release date schedule as of this moment.

Drakon’s Prey, book 2 Blood of the Drakon series—April 24th

Samhain backlistJune 8th (Entangled is doing a big release of all my Samhain backlist, except for Wolf in her Soul, which will get its own release date in August since it was only available for a week before it was pulled from sale.)

Drakon’s Plunder, book 3 Blood of the Drakon series—July 3rd

Wolf in her Soul, book 8 Salvation Pack—August 21st

Wolf of her Own, book 9 Salvation Pack—January , 2018

As well, Beyond the Page is rereleasing my Dalakis Passion vampire series (previously published with Ellora’s Cave). All five books in the series will be releasing between now and the end of the summer. Harker’s Journey, the novella that started the series, is already available for only 99-cents at most ebook retailers. Lucian’s Delight, book 2 in the series, will be here any day now. I’ll let you know when it’s out.

I also have a story in the upcoming Blue Collar: A Boys Behaving Badly Anthology due out on June 20th.

In the meantime, I’m working on another Salvation Pack book and more drakon books. J

And if you missed it, Coming Home, a sexy friends to lovers novella that was published in the Taming the Alpha box set, was released as a single title by Entangled Publishing earlier this year. Get it for only 99-cents at Amazon and other online ebook retailers.

Throwback Thursday--N.J. Walters

This Throwback Thursday I wanted to feature the first book I ever wrote. It wasn't the first one I published, but it was the book that started me on my writing journey. My style of writing has changed and evolved over the years, but Discovering Dani will always hold a place in my heart.

I love the entire Jamesville series, the small town and the people who live there. The later books are spicier, as my style developed and grew. You can read any of them as stand alone books, but you'll know all the characters if you start at the beginning.

Burke Black wanted something he could live with, but ended up finding someone he could live for.

Book 1 of Jamesville

Burke is a very rich and successful businessman whose brush with death has made him question his priorities. He’s traveled to Jamesville for peace and quiet while he plans the rest of his life.
Their lives collide when Burke accuses her of breaking into his cabin to steal from him. Their attraction to each other is immediate, and after a series of misunderstandings he finds himself caught up in the lives of Dani and her brothers.

Tuesday Teaser: The Way Home

The Tuesday Teaser this week is from THE WAY HOME. This is a stand alone read, but is part of the Jamesville series. It was one of the first books I wrote and is not as spicy as later books.

TEASER:

Rebecca stared straight into his eyes, hoping to gain a clue into what had prompted this strange proposal. “Why?”

Jake leaned forward in his chair and laid both hands flat on the table. “I need a wife, Rebecca, not some silly woman who thinks she’s in love one day and gone the next. I respect you. Heck, I really like you. We’ve been friends for seven years. I know you’re a hard worker, you’re loyal, and you don’t run away when things get tough. You’ve lived here all your life and you seem happy here. I think we could make a go of a marriage.”

Rebecca instantly picked up on the one point that mattered. “What do you mean, you need a wife?”

Tuesday Teaser: By the Book

This week, the Tuesday Teaser comes from BY THE BOOK, which is part of the Jamesville series.

TEASER:

Unable to resist, he moved closer to her. As if she sensed him behind her, she jerked upright. “What are you doing?”
“This.” Reaching out, he stroked his thumb over her cheek, brushing at the dirt there. “You have a smudge right here.”

“Oh.” A tinge of pink colored her face. He was fascinated by how easily she blushed. Her pupils dilated as he ran his thumb over the bridge of her nose. “I must have gotten that when I was down in the basement earlier.”

“No problem.” Her skin was so soft beneath his calloused fingers. He wanted to run his hands over her entire body, learning her curves, searching out all her sensitive spots.

Tuesday Teaser: The Return of Patrick O'Rourke

This week the Tuesday Teaser is from THE RETURN OF PATRICK O'ROURKE, book 3 in the Jamesville series.

TEASER:

“Shannon?”

The solemn expression on her face was replaced by a tentative smile. “I wasn’t sure you’d remember me.”

Her simple pleasure washed over him like a warm wave. What the hell was going on with him? He didn’t want to feel this way. He retreated immediately, shutting down all emotion. “Sure I remember,” he replied gruffly.

Her smile disappeared and her nervousness returned. “Here’s your menus. I’ll be back to take your orders in a minute.” She backed away, almost stumbling into the table behind her before turning and scurrying away to the kitchen.

“Man, you still have the touch with the women.” Shamus picked up the menus and handed one over to him. “Way to scare her away.”

“I didn’t scare her away.” He grabbed the menu from his brother. “I hardly said anything to her.”

“It wasn’t what you said, but how you said it. You’re one scary son-of-a-bitch when you want to be.” That said, Shamus opened his menu and perused his choices.

Tuesday Teaser: Discovering Dani

The Tuesday Teaser this week comes from DISCOVERING DANI, the first book in the Jamesville series. This was actually the first book I ever wrote back in 1996. It went through many different rewrites and revisions to finally become the book that Samhain Publishing released in 2005.

*Discovering Dani and The Way Home (Book 2 of the Jamesville series) aren't as spicy as the rest of the books in the series.

TEASER:

Dani rinsed the bucket and dried it with a rag, returning it to the small utility closet in the kitchen. Kicking the door closed with her foot, she dropped the rag into her own box. She ran tomorrow’s schedule over in her mind as she checked to make sure she had all her supplies and tools packed. Satisfied she had everything she’d brought with her, she lowered the lid and snapped it shut.

She knew she had only one job tomorrow afternoon, but it would take almost the entire afternoon. That left only the morning free for her to run errands and to Christmas shop. Earlier this morning, she’d managed to find two sweaters on sale, one each, for Patrick and Shamus. Those packages were tucked away in the truck, but she wanted to look for new jeans for both her brothers. They wore them out quickly at their ages.

With her mind on her shopping, she picked up her belongings, swung around, and remembered the briefcase a fraction of a second too late. She dropped her own box and made a wild grab, but it was too late. She cringed as the case hit the floor, handle-side down, and popped open, strewing papers everywhere.

“Oh my, Lord,” she gasped out, horrified that she might have damaged the briefcase and its contents. Dropping to her knees, Dani frantically started to gather the papers together. She was so focused on her task, she never heard the faint sound of the front door opening and closing.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Dani had only a second to register the fury in the male voice before she was forcibly spun around and found herself trapped by eyes gone black with anger.

Tuesday Teaser: A Legal Affair

This week the Tuesday Teaser if from A LEGAL AFFAIR. This spicy hot contemporary romance is a stand alone read, but is part of the Jamesville series.

TEASER:

He straightened in his seat and then stood as she approached. His lips curved up in a sexy smile that made goose bumps break out on her skin. It was a smile of promise, of anticipation.

“Are you married?” She couldn’t believe she was asking that of a perfect stranger.

“No. You?” His deep voice skated over the nerve-endings in her body, making her tingle.

She shook her head and the heat level in his eyes kicked up another notch. Much more and she wouldn’t need to wear her coat home even though it was the first of March and there was snow on the ground.

She reached out her hand and he took it, his larger, stronger one closing over hers briefly before releasing it. “Come with me.” Her voice was thick with invitation. There was no doubting what she was asking.

Without question, he followed her from the room, his hand heavy and warm at the small of her back.
