Queen of Swords

Blurb:

Rhea is a Queen of Swords woman. She’s a woman who’s discovered strength and wisdom through the trials she’s been through in her life. In Sword and Crown she’s on the verge of a change. She must reconcile who she used to be as a young woman to the changed person she is today. Her world exists in peril and she must greet that as a woman with her past as not a burden, but armor.

For most of Rhea’s life, she used her Talent as a Practitioner of sex magic to keep her world safe from a powerful dark menace. But tragedy struck and she found herself exiled to Earth.
Fifteen years later, out of the blue, a face from her past appears on her doorstep. The Nameless is back and stronger than before. Her people need her and they’ve sent her first love, Jax, to petition for her help.

As the stakes get higher with the balance of the very existence of her universe in her hands, she’s also fighting the loss of her heart to a man who walked away from her once before. She knows her past has changed her in elemental ways but while she knows she can trust Jax at her back, she has to figure out if she can trust him with her heart.
*
Sword and Crown, part of the Ellora’s Cave Torrid Tarot series, is a wonderful book! I was fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at this book and Lauren Dane does an amazing job building a world that is absolutely fascinating.

Her characters are always multi-dimensional with many layers. Rhea is quite the lady (definitely queen of sword material) and Jax is a man with depth. Not many men can own up to past mistakes and work to correct them. All the characters are incredibly real--capable of making mistakes, just like the rest of us.

Sword and Crown is releasing from Ellora’s Cave on April 25th!

Manic Monday and Chat Reminder!

Where did the past week go?

Honestly, I have no idea. But here it is Monday once again.

I had a fairly productive week last week, not as good as I'd hoped for, but I'll take the 16K I wrote. My only other excitment for last week was that I managed to break the vacuum cleaner. Oh, joy. Seems like such a waste of money to have to buy a new one, but you can't live without one. I figure I've got a few more days before I have to make my way to Walmart in search of a new one. The vacuum was nine years old but it still worked great. Would still be working great if I hadn't accidentally yanked off the rubber flap that keeps the dust from falling back out of the dust collecter. Oops.

Anyway, this week is off to a great start. I wrote 5800 words this morning. That's always a great way to start a Monday!

I'm also over at the Writerspace chat tonight with a few other Ellora's Cave authors. The chat starts at 8 PM EST and runs for an hour. Join us if you have the chance at http://www.writerspace.com/chat/ It's always a fun time.

Feature Friday!

Blurb:
Since Jack Mitchell barged into her life, librarian Aubrey Sullivan has been abducted at gunpoint, taken on a death-defying car chase, and kissed within an inch of madness. If only she does what he says, they might just get out of this mess alive. That is, if they can keep their hands off each other long enough to think straight.
*
With her debut novel, author Penny McCall has a hit! I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. It was one wild ride from start to finish. Aubrey is smart-mouthed, intelligent, and about to drive Jack mad with her questions. Jack is pure alpha male, ready to protect Aubrey no matter what.
*
If you enjoy fast-paced, nonstop action, sprinkled with a good dose of heat, give this book a try. I'm looking forward to her next book Tag, You're it! due out in July!

Writer's Wednesday

I got a little off track last week talking about genres. When I was scrolling back over my posts, I realized that I'd promised to talk about the editing process. I'll get back to genres next week, but today I want to talk about that all important part of the writing process--Editing!

Some authors love to edit, others hate it.

I'm in the first category. I really enjoy editing. Why? Because the story is written. I know how it ends and even if it's not quite the way I want it yet, I know it soon will be.

Now is the time to start at page one and work your way through each page of the manuscript. Knowing what you know now about the story and characters, you can pump up the story where it needs it. You can see where you rushed a scene, adding more dialogue or discription.

It's also the time where you can fix punctuation errors and make better word choices. I'm a write-the-book-from-start-to-finish kinda writer. I don't always pause to ponder the best word choice for a particular sentence. That's what revision is all about.

It's also a great time to catch inconsistencies. Readers have no idea how easy it is to miss something like a change in outfit or a color. You change things--sometimes a half dozen times or more--and sometimes things sneak through the cracks.

Then there is the timeline of the book. You have to make sure that the story makes sense in terms of time. You can't have it be a quiet Sunday one day and then have it be Tuesday, not without briding the gap. If your story takes place over weeks or months, you have to be careful to make sure readers understand time has passed.

The hardest thing about editing is to remember that readers can't see into your head. The writer may know the character's motivation or understand the passage of time, but if it's not explained in a way that's obvious, then readers just won't get it.

That leads me to the importance of having a reader that you trust to go through your manuscript. Some writers have more than one person. That's great if it works for you. A fresh set of eyes can help you see what you've missed in terms of character development, plot-points, grammer and consistency.

For example, my book Capturing Carly originally started at what is now chapter four. But the reader came back and said that Nathan didn't come across the way I intended, and in fact seemed a bit unlikeable. I talked to my reader and discovered that although I knew what Nathan had gone through as a character, I hadn't shown it. So, I wrote a few more new chapters and made changes throughout the entire book. My editor, when she read it, suggested even more changes. That book started as a quickie, became a novella, then a category and finally a full-fledged novel. I realized I needed to really delve into these characters if the readers were going to connect to them. In the end, I had a much strong book--one I'm proud of.

And isn't that the whole point?

I want the work I put out there to be the best it can be. I'd like to think that I'm learning with each book I write and edit. In the end, the editing process is your friend, if you choose to treat it that way.

Mail Call!

Look what came in the mail today!

I love the Jamesville series, but this is my favorite book to date.

Blurb:

Gunned down in the line of duty, New York City cop Patrick O’Rourke returns to his hometown of Jamesville to recuperate from his physical and emotional wounds. His partner is dead and his career depends on his ability to recover from his serious injuries. He doesn’t plan on staying for long, so the last thing he wants is a relationship.

Shannon Brooker’s life certainly didn’t turn out the way she’d planned, and she’s returned to Jamesville to help her aunt run the local diner. She’s not looking for a man. All she wants is some peace of mind.

When her abusive ex-husband starts a campaign to terrorize her, Shannon turns to Patrick O’Rourke, the man she had a teenage crush on many years ago. She wants to hire him as a bodyguard, but their relationship quickly becomes more personal than professional.

With Shannon wanting a small-town life and Patrick wanting to return to the life he loves as a New York cop, there seems to be no way for them to build a permanent life together. As the threat against Shannon escalates, they are pushed closer together, igniting a passion that will alter their lives forever.

Manic Monday!

Last week was another busy one.

I did manage to write 18K from last Monday to Friday. I'm pretty pleased with that. Saturday I took off and Sunday I was feeling a little under the weather, so I napped the afternoon away.

But it's Monday morning again and I'm feeling fine. I've already written 3500 words today, vacuumed the apartment and dusted. Hubby did the laundry. Woohoo! So that started my day off right.

I'm hoping to write 20K this week and I feel as if I got off to a good start this morning. I really want to be closing in on the end of this book by next Sunday. Hopefully, I'll finish it next week and then take whatever time I need to revise it. Truthfully, I'm hoping to send it to my editor sometime early in May. That might be optimistic, but I figure I'll give it a go.

Other than my writing, this doesn't look to be a particularly busy week for me, but that could change. It's not quite spring here yet, so I'm trying to stockpile work. I figure when it warms up and the sun shines, I'll want to head outdoors.

Hope you all have a great week!

Writer's Wednesday

Genres!

Love 'em or hate 'em, they're a big part of romance writing.

We all have certain genres we love to read and others we wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. Okay, maybe it's not quite that bad, but it would take a very special book or author to make us read some genres.

I'm lucky enough to be able to write in a variety of genres. I write contemporary romance for Samhain Publishing and erotic romance (contemporary, vampire, paranormal, shapeshifter, time-travel, and menage a trois) for Ellora's Cave.

Personally, I enjoy reading paranormal, vampire, contemporary and historical romance (especially Regency and Medieval). I don't mind if the sex is mild or if it's a full-blown erotic romance.

What genres do you favor most? Why?

Manic Monday!

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Monday!

I took the last two days off and managed to stay away from the computer for the most part. No mean feat let me tell you. *g*

How many of us have a chocolate hangover after this weekend, I wonder? I didn't eat too much, but what I did have was quality--Lindt dark chocolate mini eggs. YUM!

This week, it's back to work on my WIP. I didn't get nearly as much accomplished as I'd hoped to last week. I'm hoping to add another 15K to it by Friday. That should bring me about 3/4 of the way and I should be able to see the end in sight. At least that's the plan.

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend and I hope you all have a great week!

I'm planning on being off-line as much as possible and spending some time with my family.

I'll see you all on Monday!

Happy Easter!

Writer's Wednesday

In the past two weeks, I've talked about starting a new project and working your way through the middle of it.

The enthusiasm of starting a book carries you through for the first week or two. Then the days stretch out before you and you wonder if you can finish. The middle of a book is where you find out what you are made of, and if you are truly a writer or not.

Finally, you've climbed to the top of the hill and you can see the finish line. Should be easy from here, you think, after all, it's all down hill.

Stop right there!

The hardest part about writing the ending is not rushing it. Trust me, I've made that mistake more than once and you always end up regretting it as it makes even more work during the revision process.

The end is still in sight, just take the time to look around as you make your way there. No need to rush. Stop and smell the roses. Tie up all the loose ends. The finish line is still there. This is not a race and you don't get extra points by getting there first.

When you finally do reach the end and type the final keystroke, it is a feeling like no other. THE END. You have a finished product.

Sort of.

We'll talk about the revision process next week!

Tamara's Spirit by Nicole Austin

Tamara’s Spirit by Nicole Austin releases on April 3rd from Samhain Publishing.

Blurb:

There’s nowhere to run and no place to hide from old wounds and demons for the vulnerable woman behind the bawdy attitude.

How ironic to be captured by an Indian when not one of the Shooting Star Ranch cowboys is available to race to her rescue.

City girl Tamara Dobbs lives on the ranch to be close to her friends and even closer to her gorgeous cowboys, but still she feels discontent, fragmented. From the minute she runs into the new guy—sexy, unflappable equestrian, Dakota Blackhawk—she runs from the intense emotions he evokes.

On first sight, Dakota knows nothing will stop him from claiming the brazen little princess as his own—heart, body, and spirit. He’ll accept nothing less. While he would gladly take on the fight for her, she must face her own battle to become whole. Taking her out of her element is the only way he can help the sexy, stubborn woman.

Tamara may survive the emotional roller coaster ride, but she still must conquer the ultimate challenge…forgetting what others want her to be and becoming true to herself.

***************************************

This is a book about one woman's journey to heal her wounded spirit and set herself free from her horrific past, and the man who stands firmly beside her.

Tamara's and Dakota's story is absolutely beautiful. The scene where they finally make love is one of the best love scenes I've ever read, the prose is almost lyrical it's so beautiful. It is rich with details, emotionally intense, and you can feel the depth of commitment that is flowing between them.
*
Truly a sensual delight.
*
Personally, I think this is Ms. Austin's best book to date.

Manic Monday!

It's Monday once again. Where the heck did the past week go?

I've been busy this morning. I've got three loads of laundry done, cleaned the bathroom, dusted and vacuumed and managed to write 48oo words on my WIP. Not bad for a mornings work.

This week I want to focus on my WIP and try and get as far into it as I can. That's my big plans for this week.

With regards to last weeks promise of trying to find balance in my life--I am making progress. I managed to get in four yoga workouts last week. Oh, my aching muscles. LOL I also took myself out to the bookstore on Saturday morning while hubby was working. I really enjoyed the walk. It was cold, but the sun was shining. I plan to keep up the good work this week and carve out some more time for these kinds of things.

Have a great week!

Feature Friday!

Okay, I'll be the first one to admit that I initially resisted reading this series.

Why?

Because I'd read the back of book one, Dark Lover, and the blurb really didn't appeal to me. But I kept hearing so many good things about this series that I finally broke down and bought it.

Lucky for me, book two was already out because as soon as I finished Dark Lover I had to have Lover Eternal. Thankfully, book three wasn't far away and I hurried to buy Lover Awakened.

Then the long wait began and I haunted the bookstores until book four, Lover Revealed was released.

If you love vampires, then you NEED to read this series. J. R. Ward does a spectacular job creating a series like no other.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood is the band of warriors that protects their vampire race from their enemies, The Lessers. These are large, mean vampires who will stop at nothing to protect their people. All of them are cursed with problems of their own, but you will fall in love with each and every one of them.

In Lover Revealed we get the story of Butch O'Neal, an ex-cop who has stumbled into the world of the Brotherhood and their fight for survival. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire, he falls prey to the darkest force of the Lessers. He's left for dead, but is found by the Brotherhood. It will take powerful forces to save him and even then, Butch O'Neal will no longer be the man he was.

This may be the best in the series yet, and that's saying something because this entire series is spectacular. Do yourself a favor if you haven't already read this series--go out and buy it. Start at book one and work your way through. You won't be disappointed.

Writer's Wednesday

Last week I talked about beginning a new project and the excitement and adrenaline that carries you through those early days.

This week I want to talk about what comes next--the middle.

This is arguably the hardest part of writing a book for any writer--at least it is for me. Once those early days of excitement fade and the realization hits that you have another 200 pages or so to write, it becomes harder. This is when you find out if you're really a writer or just someone who thinks they want to write a book.

A lot of people get caught up in revising and revising their first few chapters, trying to make them perfect. My attitude is why bother? If you're not going to finish the book it doesn't matter what they first few chapters are like.

I'm of the opinion that revision is for when you finish the first draft. Then you can take as much time as you need to make it sparkle. I actually enjoy the process of revision because the pressure of finishing the book is gone. You have a finished product, you're just trying to make it the best it can be. But that is a topic for another day.

The real work is done in this part of the writing process. It's where you sit your butt in the chair day after day and write. The excitement of beginning has faded and the end is nowhere in sight. Yet, this part of the process is not without rewards.

Having the story unfold before you, seeing your vision of the plot begin to become reality, and watching your characters develop and interact--these are all deeply satisying. The surprises that come along the way are also a pleasure. And anyone who has ever written a book knows that the plot is never as smooth as you think it will be and your characters sometimes surprise the heck out of you. I love it when that happens and I just go with it.

The trick is to not allow yourself to get so far off track that you can't find your way back again. But I find that a lot of these surprises can add depth to both plot and character development.

Then comes the day when you feel it--the end is in sight. You've passed the main crisis point in the book and all that is left is to wrap up the loose ends.

Or is it? That's a topic for next week!

April RT Review--Stefan's Salvation

I'm thrilled with the 4 Star RT review of Stefan's Salvation that is in the magazine's April issue. Just thought I'd share some of what reviewer Gail Pruszkowski had to say:

"Fans of the virile Dalakis vampire brothers will enjoy Stefan's story. Walters provides enough background to bring new readers up to speed and sheds light on her characters' painful insecurities. Realist scenarios and dialogue propel this story[...]A skillful blending of unforgettable characters and a highly erotic and emotional plot will keep readers involved."

Manic Monday!

Good morning and welcome to another busy week!

I must say that I was pleased with the amount of work I accomplished last week. I did two rounds of edits on Woven Dreams, the next Tapestries books, and started a new book.

This week is shaping up to be just as busy, but not quite so hectic. Already this morning, I've done all the laundry, including sheets, towels and a weeks worth of clothes. The fact that I live on the third floor of an apartment building and the laundry room is in the basement, means I've gotten some exercise as well. LOL

I'm continuing on my WIP and managed to write another 12 pages inbetween running up and down the stairs to check the laundry. The clothing is all put away, the bed remade and I managed to squeeze a half hour of yoga in there too.

I realized last night as I relaxed in the tub that all I do is work, read or think about work. Not that I'm complaining. I love what I do! But, I do need to find some balance. In the two years since I left the day job to pursue writing full time, I've put on ten pounds. Not good. So, with a hint of spring in the air, I've decided to try, once again, to get some balance in my life.

I've often wondered why it's so easy to work, but hard to take time just to do things for me. I guess it's the way I was raised--to work hard. But when you work at home, it can take over every aspect of your life if you're not careful.

So that's another goal for me this week--to carve out some time for non-work-related stuff every day. I'll let you know how that goes next Monday.

Sleepy Sunday Mornings

It's a cold, damp day with light flurries, but it's Sunday, so hubby and I got bundled up and walked to a local coffee shop for peppermint tea and bagels. We gave up coffee over a year ago and I find I've lost my taste for it. I enjoy herbal teas and can drink then without sugar, which is a huge plus.

I like to sit and just chat with my hubby on Sunday mornings and enjoy the sights through the large glass windows of the shop. A window seat is the only way to go! After enjoying a leisurely breakfast, we got bundled up again and meandered over to the grocery store.

Now, I enjoy grocery shopping. I think it's because there are always so many possibilites, so many things to tempt. LOL

We picked up some fresh fruit--green grapes, pineapple, and a golden delicious apple. This time of year, really good fresh fruit is harder to come by. I thought about codfish, but they didn't have any fresh, only froze, so I passed on that. We did pick up some wonderful leaf lettuce, broccolli, sweet peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes, which means we'll probably be having a fresh salad and baked potatoes for supper. YUM!

When we were finished browsing the grocery store, we walked back home. The wind had picked up, making the air bitter cold. I was glad to get home. There's nothing like opening the front door and feeling the blast of heat hit you.

I'm probably home for the rest of the day. I thought about working, but I may just take it easy. Hubby has his work currently spread out on the kitchen table and is hard at work. Maybe I'll dig out an old book to read.

After all, it's Sunday!

Feature Friday!

Happy Friday, everyone!

I'm starting a new feature called "Feature Friday". On Fridays, I plan to talk about a book I've read or perhaps a movie I've seen.

This week, I want to talk about Cheyenne McCray's latest book, CHOSEN PREY.

Now, I've read and loved Cheyenne McCray's sensual, paranormal novels SEDUCED BY MAGIC and FORBIDDEN MAGIC.

CHOSEN PREY is strictly romantic suspense, but this thriller is as erotic and sexy as her other books.

Lyra Collins has made a life for herself in a small town in Arizona, leaving her past behind her. Or so she thinks. Lyra escaped from a cult five years ago and now her past has caught up with her thanks to former cop, turned PI, Dare Lancaster who has unwittingly led cult members straight to her!

This book is a rockin' ride from start to finish. It has a diabolic villian, in the form of the cult leader who wants Lyra back at any cost, a hunky, dangerous hero in Dare Lancaster, and a spunky, intelligent heroine.

The only word of caution I have about this book is to make sure you've got plenty of time when you start it, because you're not going to want to stop reading.

Starting a New Project!

This was supposed to be yesterday's post--something new called Writer's Wednesday. But obviously I was too caught up in starting my new project to take time to blog. LOL

Starting a new book is always an exciting time for any author. There are so many new characters to learn about (or old ones being revisited) and a myriad of new ideas and exciting plots to explore. There is always an air of anticipation when you stare at the blank screen, fingers poised over the keyboard--or if you prefer pen and paper, your fingers clutching the pen--ready to begin.

Those first few days, the sheer adrenaline will cause you to write page after page. You want to get everything down quickly before you forget one single word or idea--which is why it's a good idea to jot ideas down on a pad of paper if they're not until later in the book. Too many times when I first started writing, I swore I'd remember those wonderful ideas, only to discover weeks later that all I could remember was that I'd had a good idea. Now, I commit everything to a notepad. Even if I don't use the ideas in this book, I might use them in another. That's happened more than once!

Ah, the early days of a new project when all is well and the possibilites are endless. That times passes and soon you are into the part of the project which is the hardest for most writers--the middle. But that's another story altogether and one I'll tell you more about next week!

The Return of Patrick O'Rourke now in Print!

The Return of Patrick O'Rourke is releasing in print today from Samhain Publishing!

I'm thrilled that this book will now be available in both e-book and print. The Jamesville series is very special to me, but Patrick's book was a labor of love.

You can check it out at Samhain Publishing at
http://samhainpublishing.com/coming/the-return-of-patrick-orourke-print

You all know what I did this weekend--updating the website and renovating the blog?

I can't believe how fast the weekend slipped away and here it is Monday again. I've got a lot of things that I plan to get done this week.

First, I need to finish the edits for Woven Dreams, the next book in the Tapestries series. I'm currently about halfway through them and hope to finish by tomorrow.

Since I sent off my latest WIP, the next Awakening Desires book, to my editor late last week, that means that it's time to start a new one! Right now, I'm planning on starting the next book in the Jamesville series, Shamus' story. If that changes I'll let you know.

I also need to go to the post office and mail a package sometime in the next few days. I beat back the dust bunnies this morning by vacuuming and dusting. That should hold the place for a few days.

What are your plans for this week?

Spring Renovations!

With the hint of spring in the air this week, I decided it was time to sweep out the dust bunnies and spruce up the blog!

I figured that Saturday afternoon was as good a time as any to give it a try. There were lots of new improvements that would make it easier for me to blog--at least that's what Bloggers been telling me these past few weeks. As a technologically challenged person, I put them to the test!

I have to say that a few times I almost gave up and reverted back to the original blog. First, I couldn't find a template I liked. Then I tried out a multitude of colors, which were lovely to look at, but looked hideous in reality. I wanted something that would tie in with my website and wasn't having an easy time finding it.

This is what I came up with. Let me know what you think of it. I'm still open to changes.

Hmmm...now if I could only get inspired to do something with the apartment. LOL

Tagged-Writing Meme

TJ (http://www.dynamicthree.com/blog/index.php) tagged me with this one and it sounded like too much fun to resist. I challenge any other writer who wants to do it. Of course, don’t do it if you have issues posting bits of your WIP the way I sometimes do.

I think I'll tag Nicole Austin.
http://nicoleaustin.wordpress.com/

Turn to page 123 in your work-in-progress. (If you haven’t gotten to page 123 yet, then turn to page 23. If you haven’t gotten there yet, then get busy and write page 23.) Count down four sentences and then instead of just the fifth sentence, give us the whole paragraph.
I’ll do that and give you a teeny bit more from Jackson's Jewel…

(Please note: This is an unedited excerpt)

Now she knew where Jackson got all those hard muscles. His work was incredibly physical. “What are you doing now while you’re waiting for the harvest?”

“Watching for pests and disease, mowing the orchards, checking on the other crops.” He shrugged. “There are always a million things to do.”

“You love it, don’t you?”

A slow smile slid across his face. For the first time since she’d met him, Jackson appeared relaxed and happy. “Yeah, I do. There’s no other life for me.”

She nodded. She’d already known that, sensed it, but now he’d confirmed it. If she got involved with Jackson it would be a short-term affair. His life was here and hers was back in New York with her sisters. But, it would be an affair to remember for a lifetime.

300!

Hubby and I went to see the latest comic-book-turned-to-movie release at the theatre this weekend. 300 is a historical movie that focuses on an elite Spartan fighting force (the 300) and is a snapshot of their society and the times they lived in.

While it was a little short on plot and character development, that in no way detracted from the incredible cinematic experience. This is a very stylized movie that is a pleasure to watch. The battle scenes are very graphic and amazingly shot.

Gerard Butler is almost unrecognizable as the Spartan king, but totally believable. He certainly bulked up for this role, as did all the members of the cast. Visually stunning, this is a movie to just sit back and enjoy!

Contract News!

I just signed a new contract with Ellora's Cave!

ETERNAL BROTHERS, Book 4: Dalakis Passion, has been contracted. This is a super-plus sized book that will finally reveal why Zane York is interested in the Dalakis family. Is he a threat to them? Only time will tell.

New foes threaten the Dalakis family as well as enemies from the past. Former cop, Sam Cassidy is now firmly entrenched within the family circle and finds himself caught up in a web of deceit as he tries to protect them.

Lots of action and intrigue and two love stories to boot in this latest chapter of the Dalakis vampires!

CHASED by Lauren Dane

The third book in Lauren Dane's popular Samhain series about those mouth-watering Chase brothers is due out on March 6th! I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at CHASED!
*
BLURB:
*
Liv Davis had just about given up on her happily ever after. Burned by love more than once, she’s beginning to think Mr. Right wasn’t in the cards for her.
*
Marc Chase is a confirmed bachelor and lover of women—lots of them. He’s determined not to fall head over heels the way his brothers have. Until he kisses Olivia Davis and realizes head over heels may not be such a bad thing after all!
*
Can Liv open her scarred heart for this younger ladies man? She loves Marc more than she can begin to admit but she’s terrified of being rejected again. Marc faces a challenge greater than he’s ever faced before. Making a woman believe he’s more than just a great bedmate—making her believe he’s in it for good. In the end it will all come down to two days in a hotel and a bet. Can they both win?
*
Once again, Lauren Dane has penned another winner. The emotions and problems between Marc and Liv are all too real and easy for the reader to relate to. We all have insecurities and both Marc and Liv must overcome theirs if they are to have a chance at making their relationship work.
*
This book is not due out until next Tuesday, so if you haven't read the first two in this series--Giving Chase and Taking Chase--there is still plenty of time. This is a series not to be missed. One can only wonder what the author has in store for Matt, the final bachelor Chase brother.

Edits

Shhh...I'm not really here. I'm in that place that authors both love and hate...the edits cave!

What is the edits cave? It's that place where all the words and pages you've written begin to resemble the book that will finally be released. A good portion of the work has been done by the author (rewriting it many times before even submitting it to your editor), but there is still much to be done.

Thankfully, I've been blessed with incredible editors with both publishing companies I write for. Today, however, I am in the Ellora's Cave edits cave working on my Torrid Tarot submission. Three Swords, One Heart is a fantasy/menage a trois based around the tarot card the three of swords.

As always, my editor has valuable insights and has picked up on content, spelling, punctuation and consistency mistakes, and I'm working my way through them one at a time. It's hard work, but it's satisfying work.

I actually love the editing process. It not only means that the book is closer to being released, it also is the time when your book really becomes something special.

So, shhh. I'm not really here. And I'll see you all again in a few days. :-)

Jamesville, Summersville, Javara and Amanas...at least in my mind. *g*

*C) Wishes I'd Like Granted:

I'd like to sign a contract with a New York publisher, I'd like to hit the New York Times best sellers list, I'd like to have enough money to never have to worry about a paycheck again, and I'd like to travel with my hubby.

*D) Four TV shows I love to watch:

Romance Anyone?

When is a romance truly a romance?

Or, to put it another way, what defines a book as a romance?

I know that everyone has a different opinion, but for me, it's the Happily Ever After (HEA). I mean, that's why I read romance. I know that no matter what happens, in the end, things will work out for the heroine and her hero. Otherwise, what's the point? If there is no HEA, then in my opinion, it is not a romance.

I recently read a book marketed as a romance where the heroine's husband dies on the last page of the book. Not exactly the romantic ending I was hoping for, and I'll admit, I was disappointed. Not in the book, which was an exceptional paranormal read, but with the ending. My disappointment would not have existed except for the fact that the side of the book lists it as a paranormal romance!

When I pick up a romance, I want to be assured that all will end well. If I'm in the mood for something different, I'll pick up a mystery, a fantasy novel, a paranormal or a thriller. Maybe even a chicklit or some women's fiction. I will not expect a HEA from them, so I am not disappointed when I don't get it. I can relax and enjoy the books for what they are...great reads!

But when I reach for a romance, that's what I really want! And for me, that means the HEA!

What do you think?

Ghost Rider!

Okay, I'll admit that I'm one of those people who loves action movies, especially those with a touch of the paranormal. (Not horror movies though...*shudder*)

Hubby and I both decided to run away from work and take in the afternoon opening of the newest comic-made-into-movie extravaganza--GHOST RIDER!

I have to say that I enjoyed it. It was exactly what you'd expect, or want, from this type of movie. It had great special-effects, a decent script and a hero with angst. Plus, it has Sam Elliott. What more could you want from a popcorn movie.

No, it won't ever win any Oscars, but that doesn't matter. It does what it set out to do and those of you looking for that kind of movie will really enjoy it. I can't wait for the sequel...are you kidding me, of course there will be a sequel.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!

I hope you all have a wonderful day, and if you don't have a spouse or significant other to celebrate with, take yourself out somewhere nice and treat yourself to something special.

I've been reading a couple of books lately, and thought I'd tell you about them. The first one is...

Checkmate by Annmarie McKenna

Blurb:
What’s an alpha shape-shifting wolf to do when the woman pre-destined to be his mate no longer trusts men?

After returning home from an eight-month security job, Eli Graham is ready to claim his best friend’s little sister as his mate. He’d put it off for years, thinking he was doing the right thing by waiting. Instead of the stubborn, independent, carefree girl he left behind, Eli finds a shell of the woman he once knew.

Having lived through a near fatal attack, Nikki Taylor has hidden herself away from the world. Now the time has come to face head-on the one man who could devastate her completely, Eli Graham. She’s loved him forever, craves him, body, heart and soul, but he’s never treated her as anything but a little sister.

When Nikki witnesses a murder, she has no choice but to rely on Eli’s expertise. While guarding her from the man bent on wiping out a witness, Eli shows Nikki that he’ll not only protect her body, but he’ll show her just what it means to be a wolf’s mate.

Checkmate is the sequel to Seeing Eye Mate and it is a must-have for any lover of shapeshifter romance. I just loved it! I think it’s even better than Seeing Eye Mate, if that’s possible.

The emotional and physical turmoil that Nikki goes through is incredibly well-written. The first scene with the men in the parking lot gave me chills it was so realistic, not to mention the scene with the murder. Throw in the fact that Eli is a shapeshifter who knows that Nikki is his mate and you have one heck of a wild ride!

This book is now available at http://www.samhainpublishing.com. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

The next book is...

Animal Attraction By Alexa & Patrick Silver

Blurb:
Wes' Valentine's Day surprise has turned into a nightmare.

Grounded with thousands of other travelers at an airport by a storm, he and his wife will never make their cruise. A romantic holiday atmosphere this is assuredly not!

Brand, a feline shifter, is desperate. Sexual arousal is heavy in the airport and his flight has been canceled. He needs to join with another shifter soon or risk going feral.

When Brand spots Wes and Tabitha, the raw sexuality of these fellow shifters calls to his primal needs. But they aren't average shifters. Secrets and reclaimed heritage may pull them all together or rip them apart.

Animal Attraction is the first Ellora’s Cave release for husband and wife writing duo, Alexa and Patrick Silver, and it's one of many Valentine Vixens Quickies available now from Ellora's Cave.

They hint at a shapeshifter world that is complex and rich for future storylines. This story is a ménage, but not in the usual vein where the men focus their attention solely on the female. In Animal Attraction there is a bond which forms between Brand and Wes as well, making this a true triad in every sense of the word. As a married couple there is an emotional depth between Tabitha and Wes, even though they have been having marital problems. Now that Tabitha is aware of her heritage, she had choices to make that will affect all their futures.

Well-written, face-paced and totally unique, Animal Attraction is sure to be the first of many shapeshifter books from this writing duo. If you want something to heat up a cold winter’s night, then give this book a try.

Writing and Reading in Different Genres

Author, Annmarie McKenna, is blogging over at the Samhain blog today, so go over and check her out. She's talking about writing and reading in different genres and it got me to thinking about that subject.

As writers, I think that many of us start out with certain expectations of what we will and won't write. When I started writing, it was strictly contemporary romance. Then I discovered the world of erotic romance. Not that it was entirely new. Some authors I'd been reading for years were writing pretty HOT stuff. But this was different. I tried my hand at writing an erotic romance and was surprised by how much fun I had doing it. I may not be able to say out loud most of the more graphic words that I write, but I have no trouble writing them. LOL

Once I'd expanded my horizons to erotic romance, other ones beckoned. Since I've started, I've written erotic books that are contemporary, paranormal, menage, vampire, shape-shifter and fantasy. And even though I said that I'd never write a historical book, I do have one kicking around in my brain. I guess once you open the door, anything is possible.

I find it's the same with my reading. If I like a particular author, I'll try anything that they write, although there are some genres that just don't appeal to me. For instance, I love historical romance, but primarily Medieval and Regency. I'm not a fan of Civil War romance even though I have tried a few. I'm also reading more paranormal romance than I used to as well. There are a lot of great authors publishing in that genre at the moment.

I guess the same rings true for writing as it does for reading. Never say never! As we grow and change as people, our taste in our reading evolves as well. Doesn't mean we don't love our old standards, but we open ourselves up to finding new favorites as well. The same goes with writing. I have no idea where mine might lead me, but I'm more than willing to follow it and give it a try!

Third Year in a Row!

I just found out that my story "Sunshine for a Vampire" has been accepted as part of the 2007 Ellora's Cavemen Anthology series!

This is the third year in a row that one of my stories has been chosen and I'm absolutely thrilled. I know how steep the competition is to get into these anthologies as there are only a limited amount of spaces.

My story will be in Seasons of Seduction III which is due out on the Autumn Equinox in September! I can't wait!

Anastasia's Style Releases Today

My latest book from Ellora's Cave, Anastasia's Style, is out today!

It's part of the Valentine Vixens Quickie series and one of two in the series releasing today. There will be many more Valentine Vixens books to enjoy in the coming days!

Release Day is always so exciting for me, but it's also scary to have your "baby" out there in the public domain. I had a lot of fun writing this book because it's a lot different from what I usually write. Having a pre-existing relationship between Anastasia and her estranged husband made for an interesting situation.

Hope you enjoy it!

Winter and Resolutions!

It's almost one month into the new year and winter has arrived with a vengeance! Snow, snow and more snow, along with strong winds and cold temperatures.

It made me stop and think about the resolution I made back on January 1st--the one about finding more balance in my life. I realized that the entire month has slipped away and I haven't really done anything to change my life at all.

So, I resolved to begin again today. To that end, I baked a pan of oatmeal muffins and a pan of apple and cinnamon muffins. They were both from a box mix, but it's the thought that counts. And my hubby doesn't care where they came from. LOL

I also took the time to do a half hour of yoga after spending over two hours writing this morning. It felt good to stretch, but talk to me again in the morning. *g*

Instead of woofing down lunch while I caught up on the news, I sat at the kitchen table and ate a delicious fruit salad and one of the oatmeal muffins as I watched the snow drift downward and the plows go up the road.

It's a start and a good one. Will I backslide again? Probably. Will I begin again? Definitely.

I hope that you've had luck with your New Year's resolutions. But if you haven't, it's not too late to begin again!

Editors!

I just wanted to take a minute today to pay tribute to some of the hardest working people in the publishing industry--and no, it's not the writers. Editors are the backbone of the industry, but rarely get acknowledged in a public way.

And it's not just the editor that a writer works with on a regular basis, but those who do the final edits on a manuscript to try and catch anything that might have gotten missed.

I've had the privilege of working with five different editors to date and each one of these amazing ladies is responsible for making me a better writer. Their insights and talents have taught me a lot and with each book I write, I feel I'm becoming a stronger writer.

So, thank you to the editors. Those behind-the-scenes folks who help writers make their dreams of publishing come true. I thank you for helping make my dreams a reality!

The Way Home!

My author copies of The Way Home were finally delivered by the post office! The first batch got lost somewhere on route, but this lot arrived safe and sound.

There is nothing quite holding a print copy in your hands to make it all feel real.

They are stacked neatly on my kitchen table so I can admire them for a few days before I have to put them on my bookshelf.

5 Cupids for Capturing Carly

I was pleasantly surprised today to get a review for Capturing Carly, Book 3 in the Awakening Desires series. Cupid's Library Reviews gave it 5 Cupids! Woohoo!

Here's a snippet of what reviewer, Marina, had to say:

"The other facet that makes this story wonderful and provides a wee bit of comic relief are the many attempts at intimacy both characters try to share. These moments - even though very heated and both characters at their wits end - always seemed to be thwarted by the craziness of their prenuptial lives, especially with Carly's parents living under the same roof. The moments they have to themselves are incredibly hot and so erotic -- especially with light dominant/submissiveness present. Even the brief moments where their needs are interrupted the tension and heightening of passion is captured so well.

As with most of MS WALTERS' books this is a definite winner with two characters to love, a plot that is erotic, emotional and captivating and like a glorious cherry on top this book is just so well written."

Five Blue Ribbons for The Return of Patrick O'Rourke

Woohoo!

I'm thrilled that Natasha Smith over at Romance Junkies has given TheReturn of Patrick O'Rourke a 5 Blue Ribbon rating.

Here's a snippet of what Natasha had to say:

"Falling quickly under the spell that was Patrick O'Rourke, I found myself unable to stop reading. I love nothing better than a tough, manly cop and Patrick was that and more. In addition, he was tender, passionate, and loyal. His treatment and regard for Shannon's fears made my heart pound with intensity. Shannon Brooker's character was so well written that her fears and reactions seemed more realistic by far than what I have read in a long time.

THE RETURN OF PATRICK O'ROURKE is the third book in N. J. Walters' series, Jamesville. Having read the first two books, I anxiously awaited the release of THE RETURN OF PATRICK O'ROURKE and I would love to be the first to say that the third time is definitely the charm because this book was pure reading pleasure. Emotionally intense and extremely sensual, I can't help but recommend this book to my friends."

Thank you so much, Natasha.

Judy Mays' Rednecks!

Blurb: Rednecks 'n' Rock Candy By Judy Mays

Ever since Sheriff Brad Keister was fatally shot in a drug bust and his cousin Rusty changed him into a vampire, his life has been completely upended. No more coaching youth baseball, no more corn on the cob, no more spending hot summer afternoons fishing at the creek. He can't even do his job as sheriff competently anymore.

At loose ends and uncertain about his new vampiric identity, Brad begins to wonder if he wouldn't have been better off dead.

Then Brad rescues Mandi O'Brian from the insidious attack of a malevolent rosebush and everything changes. Thorn in her behind, she launches herself into his arms and wraps her legs around his waist. For the first time in six weeks, desire pools in Brad's groin. As he pulls the thorn out of her butt — and ignores her angry comments about sexual harassment — Brad knows he's going to become much more intimately acquainted with the woman who's got his blood pumping in all the right places again.

Even if he has to save her from drug dealers, angry bulls and herself to do it.

I've been waiting for this book ever since I read the Nibbles 'n' Bits anthology that featured the story Redneck 'n' Roses by Judy Mays. You've never read vampire stories quite like this before. The first story featured redneck vampire Rusty Nipple and city girl, Amber, who discovered that vampires aren't exactly how she imagined them to be.

This second book, Rednecks 'n' Rock Candy features Rusty's cousin, Brad Keister and Ambers's best friend, Mandi. Just like the first one, this story is funny, original and hot! You'll laugh out loud at some of the situations that Mandi gets herself into and you'll never look at rock candy in quite the same way again.

If you haven't read the first story, do yourself a favor and pick up the Nibbles 'n' Bits anthology. With authors Mardi Ballou and Delilah Devlin featured alongside Judy Mays, you really can't go wrong. Then sit back and enjoy Rednecks 'n' Rock Candy. You won't be sorry!

Back to the Routine

The Christmas tree is down and all the lights and decorations are packed away for another year. It's hard to see it all come down, but I love how big the place feels after all the holiday stuff is gone. With the New Year, there is a sense of a new beginning. That anything can happen.

I will admit that I am having a hard time getting back into my writing routine. I think it's because I left a project not finished before the holiday started. After being away from it for a couple of weeks, I'm finding it hard to pick up my momentum. But, I've spent the last two mornings in the chair in front of the computer, plowing my way through re-writes of my latest work-in-progress. I promised myself that, next year, I'm having my latest work finished before the holiday begins. I only hope I can keep that promise.

I'm the type of writer who prefers to work every day. Not that I can spend all day at the computer. But, I do like to put in several hours in the morning on my latest work. In the afternoon, I go through my emails and check out my chat groups. Doing a bit every day keeps me in the story. I know that some authors can spend all day at their keyboards. I did that once and I swore I'd never do it again. Took me days to recover. LOL

I prefer to take breaks in-between projects. When I finish one book, I'll take a few days or a week or two and start thinking about my next one, do some reading, catch up on the housework, and generally relax.

Tomorrow morning will find me back in my chair in front of my computer working on my latest project. I'm hoping to finish it within the next week. We'll see. :-)

The Year in Review

This was a year of ups and downs for me, both personally and professionally.

It started back in January 2006 when, within a few weeks of each other, both my EC and Samhain editors left their jobs for personal reasons. It took quite a while for new editors to be found for me, and while I miss my old editors, (they were both fantastic) I am settled away with two new phenomenal ones.

From Ellora's Cave I had six new releases last year. It began in January with Bakra Bride. Then came Unmasking Kelly, Drakon's Treasure, Stefan's Salvation, and finally Craving Candy and Dreams of the Oasis IV in December!

I also had two print books from EC this year. Jessamyn's Christmas Gift was included in the White Hot Holidays, Volume 3, and Ellora's Cavemen: Dreams of the Oasis IV was also released in December.

With Samhain Publishing I had three new releases last year. Discovering Dani and The Way Home, books 1 & 2 in the Jamesville series are out both as e-books and print books! The Return of Patrick O'Rourke was released in e-book in December.

All in all, I'm pleased with last year, but I've got even more plans for this coming year! I've got three books contracted (Anastasia's Style, Three Swords, One Heart, and Woven Dreams), two that I'm waiting to hear on, and I should have another one to submit within a week or so.

Personally, I'm going to try and find more balance in my life. I seem to spend all my time these days working or thinking about work. I have to find some kind of happy medium so I don't burn out.

That's my big goal for this year along with keeping up my writing!

Happy New Year!

Where has the year gone?

Seems like it was just January and now 2006 is almost in the history books. It's good to sit back and reflect on the year gone by. As Mr. Dicken's put so aptly, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." That pretty much sums up this year for me, although I do like to dwell more on the positive stuff then the negative.

This year had it's ups and downs both personally and professionally, but the good outweighed the bad, so I consider it a successful year.

I'd like to take a moment to thank all of the people who have read my books, written letters of praise and encouragement, and generally offered their goodwill and support to me throughout this past year. Writing is such a solitary profession, you'll never know just how much your continued support really means. Thank you!

I also want to thank my fellow authors at Ellora's Cave and Samhain Publishing for their good humor, support and encouragement during this past year. You're an amazing group of people, always so willing to give your time and opinions, and I'm happy to know you all.

May 2007 bring all of you health, happiness and prosperity. And may it be even better than 2006!

Happy New Year!
